Last week I went 4-3 (1NC) which is by far my worst week of picking in history. However, the real shock in that Sean Salmon actually won a fight. My overall record is now 124-59 (16NC) which is an all time low 68 percent. This weekend there is a ton of quality MMA, and I will do my best to fill you in on the happenings. Today we take a look at Dream 12, the UFC 104 under card and an up and coming female fighter.

Dream 12
Eddie Alvarez (18-2) vs. Katsunori Kikuno (12-1-2)
It should not be difficult for Eddie Alvarez to take down Katsunori Kikuno and win via ground and pound. However, what is the chance of that happening? Alvarez has always showed his love for the stand up game, and his ability to get caught. He will come out like a ball of fire and continually catch hard single shots from Kikuno. Kikuno will be able to win the decision by landing more solid shots and keeping a safe distance.

Kazushi Sakuraba (25-12-1) vs. Zelg Galesic (9-4)
FEG found another fighter who is mostly a stand up guy. Sakuraba should be able to win this on the ground, but every second they spend on the feet could spell the end for the aged superstar.

Paulo Filho (18-1) vs. Dong Sik Yoon (4-7)
A lot of people think Paulo Filho has fallen off, because he has won ugly recently. That doesn’t matter here. Last time out Dong Sik Yoon lost ugly. Filho will be the better grappler on the ground, and that really is the only place Yoon has any skill.

Marius Zaromskis (12-3) vs. Myeon Ho Bae (8-4)
The “Whitemare” gets a softball here after blowing through the tournament. Hopefully they can bring in some more contenders to face this up and coming welterweight.

Kuniyoshi Hironaka (15-6) vs. Won Sik Park (7-1-1)
The new Cage Force lightweight champion Kuniyoshi Hironaka makes his return to dream against Won Sik Park. Park has an impressive record, but Hironaka is light years ahead on the ground. If Hironaka decides to take it there it should be over quickly.

Yoshiro Maeda (25-7-2) vs. Chase Beebe (12-5)
Chase Beebe should be physical enough to take Yoshiro Maeda down and keep him there. He might not do much damage from the top position, but it will be enough for the win. Even if Beebe doesn't have an advantage on paper Karma will give him the victory in the end. So many terrible things have happened to the young man recently.

Katsuyori Shibata (3-6-1) vs. Tokimitsu Ishizawa (1-4-1)
Fan favorite Katsuyori Shibata is back to take one the guy who got a win over Ryan Gracie due to injury. It is easy to pick the guy who actually has real wins, even though he only has three.

Alistair Overeem (29-11) vs. James Thompson (14-10)
I wonder if James Thompson thinks that FEG only uses him when they need someone to be knocked out. Alistair Overeem should have little trouble dealing with the exploding ear man.

Yushin Okami (23-4) vs. Chael Sonnen (23-10-1)
Chael Sonnen will not be able to bully Yushin Okami around the cage. When the Team Quest veteran can’t bully he doesn’t win. Okami will be able to control the grappling game and take a decision victory. Will Okami ever get a title shot? I don’t think so.

Chase Gormley (6-0) vs. Stefan Struve (17-3)
Stefan Struve is not big enough or physical enough to compete with top level heavyweights. Chase Gormley will be able to grind Struve away with wrestling and finish in the later rounds.

Jorge Rivera (16-7) vs. Rob Kimmons (22-4)
Jorge Rivera is in the middle of a career resurgence, but there is a reason he thought about retiring. Rob Kimmons does have problems with strikers, but Rivera will not have the hand speed to catch him. Look for Kimmons to take the decision by winning the grappling game.

Kyle Kingsbury (7-2) vs. Razak Al-Hassan (6-1)
Although he did not really show it on TUF, Kyle Kingsbury is a promising fighter. He is still relatively young, he is a good athlete and he is training at AKA. Razak Al-Hassan is a good opponent for him, because it gives him an opportunity to work on his complete game.

Carolina Fight Promotions 2
Vinny Magalhaes (2-4) vs. Lance Evans (2-3)
These two fought for a chance to get on the eight season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” In that fight, Vinny Magalhaes hurt Rashad’s brother Lance Evans with a kick to the body. The outcome should be pretty much the same this time. Magalhaes has had trouble showing his great grappling in MMA, but here he takes on a wrestler without much power.

Shogun Fights 1
James Jones (7-8) vs. Bryan Herring (1-2)
Fans in the Baltimore area love James “Binky” Jones. His manager told me he was a fight away from the UFC, but since he has lost two straight. They looked long and hard and found him someone he can beat.

Cody Donovan (4-0) vs. Joe Stripling (1-0)
Cody Donovan has been training with Brendan Schaub for some time. He is an extremely physical wrestling with strong ground and pound. Expect him to easily take Stripling down and finish in the first round.

Joey Kirwan (1-2) vs. Dan Root (0-0)
After beating Marcus Foran in the UWC, it looked like Joey Kirwan had gotten his career on track. In his next fight he came up short against Mike Guerin in RIE. He will get back on track here against Dan Root.

Extreme Beatdown 5
Elena Reid (3-0) vs. Masako Yoshida (16-14-5)
A lot of female professional boxers have come into MMA thinking that they were going to clean up. Instead a lot of them have gotten starched. Elena Reid is not one of those boxers. She proved she was a legitimate MMA fighter by absolutely melting Michelle Waterson in her last fight. Here Reid takes on a more experienced fighter, but it is not someone who is going to be able to take the punches.

While millions of viewers watch the historic Fedor vs. Rogers show on CBS television and live at the Sears Centre Arena, PWR 14 participants will experience an exciting weekend of meeting and learning from legendary fighters and elite trainers from the sport of MMA.

On Saturday, November 7th, former World Champion fighters Andrei Arlovski and Renato "Babalu" Sobral along with world class trainers Shawn Tomkins (Extreme Couture), Pat Miletich (Miletich Fighting System), Sean Bormet (Overtime School of Wrestling), and Dr. Doug Mango (Team Curran) will take PWR participants through a fantasy course of MMA instruction and exhibition at Team Curran Gym in Crystal Lake, Illinois.

Then on Sunday, November 8th, PWR will host a revolutionary luncheon at the Marriott in Hoffman Estates, Illinois entitled "The Morning After," featuring an inside look into the mind of the fighter as Fedor Emelianenko, Gegard Mousasi, Fabricio Werdum, and other fighters from the November 7th Strikeforce/M-1 Global show offer an in depth analysis and discussion of their fights from the preceding evening.

Following the Sunday seminar, PWR fighters and trainers will host a Meet and Greet, offering PWR participants a chance to get a picture and autograph from their favorite MMA stars.   Specials guests from the world of MMA will also appear.

Only Live Weekly-Broadcast MMA Show in U.S.; One of the Largest TV Distribution Deals in Fighting Sports History

CHICAGO (October 20, 2009) - Bellator Fighting Championships will broadcast its second and third seasons on FOX Sports Net, NBC and Telemundo through a unique and landscape-altering alliance. Bellator's first-of-its-kind, tournament-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion will be available nationwide for 24 weeks in 2010 to 112 million homes through NBC, 82 million homes through FOX Sports Net (FSN) and its regional sports network affiliates, as well as to 62 million homes through Telemundo.

The historic agreement, which was announced today by Bellator CEO/Founder Bjorn Rebney and executives from FOX Sports Net and NBC, is among the largest in MMA history and promises to introduce Bellator, and the fastest-growing sport in the U.S., to millions of new fans.

"Since our launch earlier this year, there has been an overwhelming demand from MMA fans nationwide for us to broadcast our events live and through a widely available platform," Rebney said. "We are thrilled to have signed this groundbreaking agreement with FOX Sports Net, NBC and Telemundo, which will bring our unique and exciting brand of tournament-based MMA events to a dramatically expanded audience of both English- and Spanish-speaking fans."

Under this new multi-tiered alliance, Bellator events will be distributed live in primetime on Thursday nights beginning April 8, 2010 on FSN and its regional sports network affiliates. The top moments from each week's live events will then be condensed into an action-packed 30-minute highlight show, broadcast every successive Saturday night in the all night daypart on NBC, and a one-hour highlight show will air in Spanish on Telemundo every Saturday night from midnight to 1 a.m.  Each of the three broadcasts will be aired in high definition.

Bellator Season 2 premieres Thursday, April 8, 2010, and runs for 12 successive weeks.  Season 3 kicks off Thursday, August 12, 2010, and also runs for 12 successive weeks.  Each season follows Bellator's electrifying tournament format, where fighters in each of Bellator's weight divisions determine their own destiny to become Champion or No. 1 Challenger.  Event venues, sponsors, featured fighters and other details on Seasons 2 and 3 will be announced over the coming months.

[Blog] International MMA Spotlight - The Fights: Yusuke Masuda vs. Antoni "Antonio" Chmielewski at KS...: As part of PROMMA.INFO’s International MMA Spotlight series, for the next couple of weeks we will be presenting fights from Poland’s premiere mixed martial arts organization Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki (KSW).

On May 9, 2008, at Torwar Hall in Warsaw, Poland, Yusuke Masuda took on Antoni "Antonio" Chmielewski at "KSW 9 - Konfrontacja." The Polish fighter Chmielewski was 15-2 coming into the fight, and Masuda, from Japan, was 2-4-1.

It wasn't hard to figure out who the favorite was. However, Masuda proved to be much tougher than what Chmielewski may have expected. Although Chmielewski was the submission expert, Masuda was able to take him down and fend off repeated submission attempts.

The fight ends up going the distance and Chmielewski gets the decision but not without some hard work. Grappling fans should appreciate the effort from both men. Check back tomorrow for more KSW fights.

Justin Wren TUF Blog: Here to make a STATEMENT!
First off I would love to say thanks to PROMMA.info for letting me blog for their site, they believed in me way before I was anything and I am thankful to be blogging for them! This episode went really well and I am excited that I got my first victory wearing the "infamous" UFC gloves. I am extremely blessed that I won against such a seasoned veteran!

Matt was being such a wuss during a lot of the filming! He would always have excuse after excuse and he was definitely a drama queen. I have never met a man that needed so much attention, and that was such a weird dude when it came to fighting. He always wanted to talk himself up as the best fighter in the house, but then wanted to be a baby and not train, but still wanted to fight. Matt is smart though... He DEFINITELY knows how to get a TON of air time!

Wes Sims stepped in a "family of Jensens" one day... Funny back story is that I was a neighboring room to Wes and I heard Wes freak out while he was in the shower and then immediately come out giving Zak a hard time cause he took a "long" shower right before Wes got in there. Another back story is that Zak and I were suppose to fight each other a couple of months before the filming of the show, and he just didn't show up to weigh ins... I think a lot of people are starting to find out that he is mentally weak, a lot like Matt Mitrione faking his injury. So both teams were dealing with a bad apple. Matt definitely needed attention... and maybe a group hug!

I knew that I was being picked for the fight! I was so excited to be fighting... I was chomping at the bit the ENTIRE time I was there.  Rashad and my other coaches thought that I was one of the better guys on the show (HUGE compliment) and I wanted to take out someone that would look good to the fans on TV. Sims is a vet, and is huge, so a win against him would show that I am a serious contender for the show. I think the majority of the guys thought that I was the underdog, but in my mind, as a 22 year old kid if I were to have an impressive victory then it would do great things for my career and I was fortunate for the opportunity.

Kimbo definitely thought I was the underdog. Kimbo definitely didn't respect my wrestling pedigree and would rather respect Wes's reputation for "not tapping." Cool I guess, seems educated. Rampage said I only know Greco as well. I am so extremely thankful that I had the coaches I had, they were the absolute best and I was so fortunate!

Weigh ins came around and I had something funny planned, I decided to wear some purple leopard manties and Wes came out with some funky undies that were definitely stuffed with socks! Haha, what was funny is that we didn't plan that!

"This is my life, this is my passion, and my dream is to become a World Champion one day." Going into this fight this thought continued going through my head constantly, it still does. I am extremely fortunate I get to do what I love for a living, and going into this fight I knew I had a ton to prove, to myself.

Going into the fight the plan was to just get it to the ground and not stay in his guard. I used a body lock to take it to the ground and I didn't want to be put in guard. I went into side mount, then north south, then side, then locked up the arm triangle and transitioned to mount then back to side mount and started walking my body in a circle like a clock. Wes didn't tap and ended up passing out.

Funny story is that I actually heard Sims snoring in my ear for about 10 seconds. The thought "This is one of Sims antics to just make me let go" literally went though my head! I had seen Sims fight Mir and give a thumbs up and flip him off WHILE defending an arm triangle. I didn't want to let go in case Sims was pretending to be passed out lol!

I am so thankful for my first victory of the show! I am incredibly blessed and I am lucky to have had the opportunity, and that things turned out the way that they did. I am fortunate, and am looking forward to the rest of the show!

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker, along with Jake Shields (23-4-1) and Jason "Mayhem" Miller (22-6), participated in a national media conference call on Wednesday to discuss their upcoming Strikeforce Middleweight Title fight scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7 as part of the "Fedor vs. Rogers" undercard.

Here are highlights from today's call:

SCOTT COKER

"As far as stacked cards go our history with our promotions with SHOWTIME and now with CBS our cards have always been stacked from top to bottom. And I think that's one of the great things for our fans is that they get to watch not one but two, three, four, five fights. They get to see great fights and the stars. And it's no difference with our Chicago card. You get to watch Fedor, Jake and Miller ... and it's all for free and you don't have to pay $49.95. So we'll continue this journey of putting on cards with fights four or five bouts deep. That's the mandate. To book as much talent and get the greatest fights that we can."

Do you plan to bring in some local fighters to fight on the undercard? "We will be working with some of the local gyms and looking over some of the local fighters and having them come in and compete."

What is your plan for the middleweight title after this fight? "Right now there are a couple people in mind and we'll determine that when this fight is over."

What about Cung Le? "Cung let the belt go because he has other movie opportunities right now and hopefully he'll be back soon. He understands what a commitment it is to be an MMA fighter and we're going to move forward and see how it goes."

JAKE SHIELDS

"I want to say I'm very excited to be on this card. It's going to be a great night for the fans. Going back to CBS is huge. This will be my third time fighting on CBS and I really appreciate the exposure."

"I think it's going to be a great fight. We match up pretty well. It's going to be non-stop action. I'm in great shape and I'm sure he will be also. This is a big opportunity for him."

On being friends with his opponent: "We're cool with each other. We've gone out a few times. It's not like we sit at home and talk with each other on the phone or anything."



At this point, Miller jumps in: "You're breaking my heart, man. I thought you were my best friend. I thought we had a connection."

Continued Shields: "I have fun hangin' out with him but I have no problem punching him in the face either. When we get done with the fight we'll be cool but we won't have any problem once we're in the ring.

"Hopefully it'll be an easy fight but if not we'll hopefully just beat the crap out of each other and make the fans happy."

Have you been focusing more on your stand up for this fight? "I've been working on every aspect for this fight. I've been doing boxing, kick boxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu, conditioning. I've been working on everything. I haven't been working on just one approach to fighting "Mayhem." I'm just working on every aspect."

JASON "MAYHEM" MILLER

"It's great that Fedor will be on the undercard of this show. What? What? Oh, nevermind, I guess I'm on the undercard for Fedor. I'm really pumped and excited for Strikeforce who it appears is making some big, big moves in the MMA world"

About the attention he will be receiving over the next couple of weeks: "You know, if they stick a microphone in myself I'll rip on it. I want everybody to know about this fight and I want everybody to watch this fight. If the MMA fans don't know about this fight then it's not my fault because I'm twittering, facebook-ing and myspace-ing and doing whatever I can for it."

On his friendship with Shields: "If he knocks me out I'll be very sore at him for one night. Nah, I've fought my own Dad so many times and we're still friends. It all comes down to competition. I think it's very strange for the common reporter to understand that we're trying to hurt each other as bad as we can in those 25 minutes inside the cage but that afterwards we can be buddies because that's our job and it's just a competition."

"If the media wants us to we can hate each other."

"I'm going to put some showmanship into it. That's not that common in the shows here in America but if I can put some flair into it and people are going to be talking about it around the water cooler on Monday, well there you go. That's the way to capitalize that we're on CBS, regular television where you can get it on your bunny ears."

On Robbie Lawler being the only common opponent. Will you watch that fight? "I'm not going to focus too big on the Lawler fight as a source of inspiration for this fight coming up. I know Jake has a lot of things I have to avoid and that he also has a lot of chinks in his armor and things that I can exploit but the Lawler fight for me is not my No. 1 choice to watch."

Where were you when you heard that you'd be fighting on CBS Nov. 7? "I don't know. I had kind of heard it was shaping up and then it came together. And I was like, ‘Oh, I am fighting' so I better start training harder than that. I've from Missouri: the Show Me state so it wasn't till they showed me that I believed it. It wasn't like ‘Where were you when Kennedy was shot.' It wasn't like I was holding a coconut and I dropped it when they told me."

On fighting on CBS: "Is there like some kind of special mat that we fight on for CBS that is thicker than other mats that's going to make us slower or not used to? I don't think at this stage of my career I'm going to be nervous or worries about anything. Those days are far behind me; to be overly excited because everyone is watching me. There's no disadvantage to that. If anything it's an advantage because I know everyone is watching and I'm more focused and more ready to do this."

[Blog] Rene Nazare defends his lightweight title at "Reality Fighting: Ferocity" in Plymouth, Mass. on Nov...: On Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) brings mixed martial arts to Plymouth Memorial Hall in Plymouth, Mass. with "Reality Fighting: Ferocity." The event will feature a lightweight title fight between undefeated Reality Fighting champ Rene Nazare (5-0) taking on number one challenger Will Kerr (8-1). In addition, there will be a minimum of 15 professional and amateur MMA fights.

Nazare is a BJJ world champion who trains and teaches at Dungeon MMA on Cape Cod. He won the title with a submission win over previously undefeated champion Tony Leate back in May. His opponent, Will Kerr is considered to be one of the top-ranked lightweight fighters in New England and trains out of Strikezone MMA in New London, Conn.

Also featured on the card will be a bantamweight title fight between current champion Tom Giove (9-5) out of South Shore Sportfighting and Jeff Wahtola (2-0) with Dungeon MMA.

Tickets are available online at www.realityfighting.tv, or by calling 860-295-0403.  Ticket prices are $40, $60, $75, and $200. Plymouth Memorial Hall is located at 83 Court St in downtown Plymouth.  The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the first fight begins at 8:00 p.m.

A couple of MMA pioneers stepped in the cage at W-1 “High Voltage” Saturday at the Robert Guertin Arena in Gatineau, Quebec. Carlos "The Ronin" Newton (15-13) took on "Mr. International" Shonie Carter (48-20-7) in the main event of what was supposed to be a five-round welterweight title fight.

Newton failed to make the 170-pound weight limit, so a catch weight was set and he forfeited a portion of his purse. Then he failed to make the catch weight limit and his pay was docked even further.

Although he got off to a slow start in the first round, Newton bounced back in the second and third rounds using striking and submission attempts. "The Ronin" walked away with a unanimous decision victory with scores of 29-28 from all three judges, making it his second win of the year in the Warrior-1 promotion.

Carter gave his thoughts on the fight and Newton after the bout,
"I came out to do my job to the best of my ability and I came up a little short this time. Carlos is a most worthy opponent -- he should be in the hall of fame and I think that his time will come.”
The co-main event featured a featherweight title fight between Adrian Wooley (6-1) and previously undefeated Remi Morvan (6-1). Wooley used his exceptional wrestling to close the distance, put Morvan on his back, and control the action for the majority of the fight. The judges ruled it a unanimous victory making Wooley the new W-1 featherweight champ.
