Justin Wren TUF 10 blog: Kimbo Slice vs. Big Country
This episode, in my opinion, was a lot better than the last one. The buildup, suspense, and the fight were better than the last. I enjoyed seeing more of the guys training up to the fight... but that is me, a fighter, and I like more of that than any of the drama...haha.
Way to go "Big Country" bringing Team Rashad to 3-0! Going into this fight I believe every one of our team members and coaches saw it playing out the very way it did. The fight was pretty exciting because Kimbo landed some great shots and Roy did what he had to do to win the fight... It could have been a little more exciting if Roy would have landed some better shots though.
I have to say that in my life right now, I have never felt more fortunate! Being on Team Rashad and having the coaches we had was incredible. The absolute best coaching, smartest training, best cardio and technique workouts I have ever been a part of. The team morale at this point is obviously extremely high! I felt like it was all a snowball effect and everything was getting better and better for Team Rashad; our team was starting to mesh, and we could not have had better coaching!
Leading up to the fight, Coach Trevor Whitman was helping Roy prepare for Kimbo's powerful hooks, something he's known for. "T" is the best striking Coach I have ever witnessed and he was a major asset on the show. I am very lucky to still be working with him.
Roy went into the fight with a very good game plan and I thought it looked like it might be over in the first. The funny part of the episode, to me, is that Roy tells the guys about counting when someone is being "crucifixed" and how the ref has to stop it if he isn't defending himself. We all planned the day of the fight that we would count if Roy put Kimbo in that position.
In the second round, Roy scored a good takedown when Kimbo threw a knee and was off balance. Roy put him in the "crucifix" for the second time and we ALL started counting! Ref Herb Dean had no choice but to stop the fight.
Watching the fight live, I thought it was a lot more exciting than watching it again on the show. I think Roy could have ended the fight decisively, having BOTH Kimbo's arms pinned to the mat, and instead of unloading a couple of hard punches to end it, Roy decided to tap him on the forehead.
As you can tell by Dana's response, he thought he could have ended it in a more exciting fashion as well. This fight was the biggest fight in TUF history and the fans want to see an explosive finish.
Kimbo is a gamer! I have tons of respect for both of those guys that fought on tonight's episode. However, Kimbo took the BIGGEST risk of all the fighters coming on the show! That right there, made my respect level for him shoot through the roof.
He has made plenty of money in his fighting career, and just as much as Roy keeps saying that he is taking a leap of faith... I think Kimbo took a HUGE leap, and even though he didn't win, I think it will pay off for him in the long run. He is so humble and wanting to learn... That guy will be back and will be a more complete fighter.
[caption id="attachment_28068" align="alignleft" width="284" caption="We moved one episode closer to seeing Justin do this to someone on Team Rampage."][/caption]
One thing they left out of the episode was Roy and I's "Belly Bump" haha. We planned that once he won and was exiting the cage, we would "Belly Bump." I don't know if the cameras missed it or what but I think it was funny, ha. Roy is a good dude, and at that time he and I were starting to train more and more together and build a friendship. I am not so sure if he is going to get his BK [Burger King] endorsement though... If he does, great for him!
Leading up to the next episode, it starts to get INTERESTING. As they said in the preview for next week..."There is a RAT on Team Rashad; if you're not with us, then you've gotta be against us right?"
We will start seeing some really, really shady stuff by a team member... maybe two, starting next week!
From here on out, the fights are outstanding, literally fights that will make highlight reels! Guys are about to start getting laid out on the canvas; guys either tap too late, don't tap at all, or if there is a decision, they are all out wars where neither guy backs down!
As always I want to thank PROMMA.INFO for letting me blog for them. I am very fortunate they took interest in me and I am thankful for the opportunity.

[Blog] Sidiah Parker wins main event at "King of the Cage: Forged Steel" on Sept. 26 - full resu...: King of the Cage brought "Forged Steel" to the Ute Mountain Casino in Cortez, Colo. on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009. The card featured seven pro fights and five amateur fights. The main event featured Freddy Sandoval vs. Sidiah Parker. Apparently, Sandoval was sick the last week of training it really showed as his cardio gave way early in the fight. Parker showed great stand up and took the win by TKO at 4:38 into the first round.
Also fighting was hometown favorite Rylan Sandoval taking on Mike Orchouski. It was a three round war that went back and forth but Orchouski's ground skills and takedowns proved too much as he took a unanimous decision. It was a great night of fights and former pro football player and Bully Beatdown star Michael Westbrook served as special guest.

[Blog] Tim Kennedy chokes out Zak Cummings in Strikeforce Challengers main event - photo gall...: [caption id="attachment_27854" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Photo by: Esther Lin/STRIKEFORCE - Tim Kennedy, a former sniper for the Seventh Special Forces, submitted Cummings with a north-south choke in the second round."][/caption]
United States Army veteran and rising middleweight mixed martial arts (MMA) star Tim Kennedy (11-2) dominated a previously unbeaten Zak Cummings (10-1), submitting Cummings with a north-south choke in the second round (2:43) of their STRIKEFORCE Challengers main event battle live on SHOWTIME from Tulsa, Oklahoma’s SpiritBank Event Center on Friday, September 25.
In his highly-anticipated MMA debut, two-time U.S. Olympic wrestling team member Daniel Cormier (1-0) displayed signs of a bright future in the sport, stopping Gary Frazier (0-1) with a ground and pound offensive in the second round (3:39) of battle.
Kennedy, a 29-year-old former sniper for the Seventh Special Forces who recently accepted a position with The Texas National Guard in order to be able to pursue his MMA career more thoroughly, rocked the 25-year-old Cummings early in the first round after the two engaged on their feet.
Kennedy secured a takedown and began to unload with punches from half guard. Cummings rolled out and mounted Kennedy, but Kennedy quickly escaped and went on the offensive again with non-stop punches and regained the mount.
After surviving the first round, Cummings attempted a takedown early in the second stanza, but was caught with a left hand before escaping an attempted standing guillotine choke.
[caption id="attachment_27846" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Photo by: Esther Lin/STRIKEFORCE - Gary Frazier eats one by Daniel Cormier."][/caption]
While trying to flee Kennedy’s clutches, Cummings fell to the canvas into a choke hold. Kennedy transitioned to a north-south choke hold and Cummings tapped out.
The 30-year-old Cormier, the 2001 NCAA national wrestling championship tournament runner-up for Oklahoma State University, stalked Frazier (0-1) from the outset of the card’s first live SHOWTIME televised bout. Frazier, a 21-year-old native of Shawnee, Oklahoma, attempted to run, but Cormier caught up and, in the second round, worked his way to the mount position after slamming Frazier to the canvas.
Cormier hammered Frazier with punches from the mount, prompting Frazier to give up his back. Cormier continued to batter Frazier from top position until the referee stopped the fight due to Frazier’s inability to defend himself any longer.
Another former NCAA Division I wrestling star and one of MMA’s most promising young prospects, 27-year-old Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (4-0) of St. Louis, Missouri extended his perfect record, submitting Huntington Beach, California’s Zach “The Lisbon Outlaw” Light (6-9) with an arm bar in the second round (3:38) of action.
Woodley asserted himself with his superior athletic ability in the first round, scooping up Light and slamming him to the canvas. Woodley was able to mount Light twice in the round, but Light defended well, not allowing Woodley to create too much space between the fighters.
[caption id="attachment_27849" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Photo by: Esther Lin/STRIKEFORCE - Zach Light gets lit up by Tyron Woodley."][/caption]
Woodley scored another slam in the second round and transitioned to an arm bar from which Light tapped out.
Kevin “The Shaman” Jordan (11-8) utilized his MMA experience to take down six-time world kickboxing champion and K-1 legend Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo (2-0) in the first round of a heavyweight bout. Jordan mounted and rained down on Sefo, still a newcomer to MMA, with punches.
In danger, Sefo repeatedly popped his hips up in an effort to throw Jordan from the mount. Although Sefo was unsuccessful at changing position, he survived the round.
Jordan shot for a takedown after the fighters squared off at the beginning of the second round. On the way in, however, he dropped to the canvas in pain and verbally submitted at the 24 second mark of the round. Jordan is being examined for a possible torn quadriceps of the right knee.
Local rivals and world class kickboxers Thomas Longacre (5-0) and Travis “The Dark Knight” Calanoc (4-1) put on a fireworks show full of rapid exchanges of punches and round kicks on their feet.
[caption id="attachment_27848" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Photo by: Esther Lin/STRIKEFORCE - Thomas Longacre lands a shot on Travis Calanoc."][/caption]
Longacre dominated the matchup from punching range early in the first round before Calanoc briefly turned the tides with his own boxing skills.
In the second stanza, Longacre took over with repeated flurries. He continued to find his mark in the third round. After the fight went to the mat, Calanoc maneuvered impressively from his back and attempted an arm bar in the third round, but Longacre escaped and brought the fight back to stand up mode.
In the final 10 seconds of the bout, Longacre and Calanoc swung away at each other relentlessly until the bell sounded.

[Blog] Strikeforce and Showtime Sports team up to deliver live MMA to American Forces Netw...: SAN JOSE, Calif. (Sept. 24, 2009)-Premier Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promoter STRIKEFORCE and SHOWTIME Sports, have teamed up with the American Forces Network to deliver live MMA events to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces serving overseas via AFN, the worldwide television broadcast network. The deal calls for all STRIKEFORCE events for the remainder of 2009 to be distributed on AFN including the Nov. 7 M-1 Global co-promotion of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers, airing live on CBS Television Network.
The debut offering-this Friday's Strikeforce Challengers event on SHOWTIME-features American military hero Tim Kennedy, the 29-year-old Special Forces soldier who has served tours of duty in Middle East, versus undefeated middleweight Zak Cummings in the main event from Tulsa, Okla.
"We are proud to be able to bring live Strikeforce events to the men and women of The United States Armed Forces," Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said. "These are people that have dedicated their lives to protecting our country so it's great to be able to give something back to them. And the timing couldn't be better. Having Army Ranger Tim Kennedy headline a terrific Challengers event is the perfect start."
"Special thanks to Scott Coker for providing the AFN Broadcast Center with the approval," says AFN's Executive Director, Jeffrey White. "Without his initiative and clear understanding of our worldwide military broadcasting mission, delivery of Strikeforce to our well-deserving audience overseas would not be possible."
The U.S. Department of Defense operates the American Forces Network which is carried on bases in 175 countries and aboard 140 U.S. Navy ships at sea around the world reaching nearly one million American service men and women.
"We are delighted to add Strikeforce mixed martial arts programs to our AFN schedule," said Corey Slutsky, Sports Director at the American Forces Network. "We provide a touch of home to U.S. military service members and their families deployed around the world and we salute the Strikeforce team for their support of the troops."
An elated Kennedy said: "This is freaking fantastic news. Right now, the Special Forces group that I recently left are deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Every single friend of mine is over there and I was planning on emailing every one of them the results of my fight right after it finished on Friday, but instead they get to watch it. I'll be emailing everyone tonight and telling them and letting them know."
Kennedy spoke to the popularity of MMA amongst his fellow soldiers, "It attracts the same kind of people: Intense, excited, aggressive, athletic type people. Also, the skills that guys use in MMA are skills that guys use to stay alive in combat. Boxing, wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, that's stuff that soldiers use to survive. Some of the Special Forces guys train in that stuff everyday. And for them to get to watch some of the guys that are the best in the world at it is exciting."
Kennedy, (10-2) recently accepted an offer to serve in the Texas National Guard after spending six years in The United States Army, the last three as a sniper in the Seventh Special Forces Group.
He feels no pressure whatsoever being the main event Friday. "If I'm not getting blown up or getting shot at then it only means it's going to be fun for me," he said. "This is not life threatening. This is me going out and doing something that I enjoy and I enjoy fighting."
In his last start, on June 19 at ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash., on Strikeforce Challengers, Kennedy dominated Nick "The Goat" Thompson, stopping him on the ground with an onslaught of punches in the second round (2:37).
"After 9/11 happened, I wanted to do something for my country," he explained. Kennedy's new job will allow him to remain in the armed services while maintaining enough flexibility to take his MMA career to the next level.
"The military is my life," said Kennedy. "I am going to serve as long as they'll let me. I'd love to retire in uniform."

[Blog] PROMMA.INFO contest sponsored by The History Channel - How Bruce Lee Changed The Wo...: PROMMA.INFO in cooperation with The History Channel is giving away the DVD "How Bruce Lee Changed the World." We will be giving away three copies of the video over the course of the next week. Feel free to sign up for just one of the contests or try your luck at all three. Each contest will be different.
In this first contest, the first person who answers the following question correctly will win the DVD:
Who is the first professional fighter interviewed by PROMMA.INFO and who did this fighter say he most wanted to fight "by far?"
The answer is easily found within our site with just a bit of effort. Trust me, if you are a Bruce Lee fan, it is worth it. There are quite a few documentaries out there about Bruce Lee, but no one does it like the History Channel.
"How Bruce Lee Changed The World" takes a look at how Lee affected many aspects of modern society and how he influenced some of the most powerful people within sports and entertainment. UFC President Dana White says within the film, "Bruce Lee is the father of mixed martial arts."

[Blog] Yokota knocks out Schultz, Nansen knocks out Izumi - Sengoku 10 notes and commentar...: [caption id="attachment_27528" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Kazunori Yokota gets the knockout of the night at Sengoku 10 with a devastating KO of Ryan Schultz."][/caption]
"Sengoku: Tenth Battle" took place Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The event aired live on HDNet here in the U.S. beginning at 2 a.m. CT / 12 a.m. PT.
The highlight of the night was Kazunori Yokota's huge overhand right knockout of Team Quest's Ryan Schultz midway through the first round. Schultz has dropped his last three bouts.
The main event also provided some nice fireworks between Olympic judo silver medalist Hiroshi Izumi and Muay Thai specialist Antz Nansen. It was the MMA debut for both fighters, and Izumi made the terrible mistake of trying to stand and trade strikes with Nansen.
He absorbed several big shots and for a moment seemed to have a granite chin, but finally ended up flat on his but after eating a massive right hand. That was it and Nansen was awarded the KO victory just a couple of minutes into the first round.
Below are my notes and commentary on each fight. If you want more details check out PROMMA.INFO's complete play-by-play.
Maximo Blanco (3-3-1) def. Tetsuya Yamada (4-1) by TKO Round 2
Yamada took Blanco's back early in the fight but but could not hold it. He also had a slick leg lock attempt and a few other submission attempts including an arm bar in round one. In the second round Blanco landed a huge knee up the backside of Yamada right in the groin. Just a few seconds later the referee awarded Blanco the TKO victory. Blanco showed off his acrobatic skills with a few flips after the fight. At only 19-years-old Yamada will most likely be around for quite some time.
Joe Doerksen (43-12) def. Takenori Sato (9-7-4) by TKO Round 2
"The Voice" wanted to know why Sato or anyone for that matter would want to purposely dye their hair grey? Sato is a student of Sakuraba. Doerksen landed a big right hand that dropped Sato pretty early into round one. He tried to pound him out but Sato survived. Sato got a nice hip toss on Doerksen in round one but lost the advantage on the ground and Doerksen ended up getting the best of it. Sato attempted a guillotine just as round one ended. Doerksen clearly had the advantage on the feet. Sato is a very good grappler however. Doerksen got full mount in round two but Sato almost immediately reversed it and got top control within Doerksen's guard. Doerksen got full mount again and the referee stood them up to their feet. That was the fatal move however as Doerksen landed a big combination that dropped Sato to the mat and ended the fight.
Dan Hornbuckle (19-2) def. Nick Thompson (38-12-1) by TKO Round 2
Dan Hornbuckle has finished 15 of his 20 opponents. In his last fight he knocked Akihiro Gono unconscious with a vicious head kick. "The Goat" came out dancing to "Kung Fu Fighting." He trains out of Minnesota Martial Arts Academy with Lesnar and the boys. Both guys look very amped and happy to be in the ring. Gono is actually ringside commentating the fight for a Japanese broadcast. Hornbuckle started the fight with a head kick that was mostly blocked. Hornbuckle got a big slam. Thompson locked in a straight arm bar as Hornbuckle took his back and is looking for a rear-naked choke. The Goat spins and ends up on top. Hornbuckle escapes and lands a big elbow from the top. Hornbuckle lands some nice punches in round one. He seems to have the much cleaner striking. It's a good first round. guy Mezger gives the first round to Hornbuckle and I would agree. The Goat has a cut over his right eye that's producing quite a bit of blood. "The Voice" just gave a shout out to Gorgeous George and Goze at MMA Junkie Radio. That is so awesome. Hornbuckle tagged The Goat with a nice jab that wobbled him then finished him off with some big punches and a knee. Great performance by Hornbuckle.
Fabio Silva (12-5) def. Ryo Kawamura (10-5-2) by TKO
Silva is coming off a loss to King Mo at Sengoku 6 and Mo defeated Kawamura at Sengoku 7. This is a rematch. Silva gave Kawamura his first loss in 2007. Silva being very aggressive and lands some big punches and knees then tops it off with a ncie takedown and takes Kawamura's back. Kawamura gets up and is defending well but Silva drops him with some big punches and continues the barrage until the referee is forced to step in as Kawamura's corner simultaneously throws in the towel.
Kazunori Yokota (10-2-3) def. Ryan Schultz (20-12-1) by KO
The guys exchange punches and leg kicks. Yokota has his chin straight up in the air but he just nailed Schultz with a huge over hand right and knocks him out cold. Schultz is still unconscious nearly a minute later. Wow. This is crazy. Yokota says after the fight this is his first KO in Sengoku. He has not even checked on his opponent who could be dead for all he knows. Schultz is STILL NOT MOVING, ok now he's moving. But he's still on his back. That was huge. Shultz gets up to a sitting position. They may bring in the stretcher for him. Definitely KO of the night thus far.
Makoto Takimoto (6-5) def. Lee Jae Sun (5-5) by decision
You have to love Jae Sun Lee's name. It reminds me of the pro skater turned My name is Earl superstar. Lee gets full mount and Takimoto gives up his back, Lee transitions to arm bar but Takimoto gets out. Takimoto goes for a guilllotine but Lee ends up in side mount looking for a kimura. Guy Mezger gave round one to Takimoto but was really impressed with Lee. Takimoto did have a great hip toss in round one. Takimoto was an Olympic gold medalist in judo. Trigg defeated him at Sengoku 4. Lee does a good job passing the guard in round two and even got full mount briefly. Lee lands some good knees to the ribs from side mount. Takimoto gets a good takedown but gets reversed almost immediately. Takimoto reverses, lands some knees to the head. Lee stands up as the bell sounds. Mezger gave round two to Takimoto as well. Takimoto maintained control most of round three but virtually did no damage.
Antonio Silva (13-1) def. Jim York (11-3) by arm triangle submission
Here's the fight I've been waiting for, the big boys. Silva came strutting into the ring to Eminem. York has his chin straight up in the air. The boys are swapping leg kicks to start out. Silva shoots and gets the takedown. Silva has side control and lands a big knee that puts York through the ropes. Ref stands them up. York lands a jab to Silva's chin. Silva fires back. Silva lockas up York's body. Silva gets the takedown. Silva lands some hammer fists from half guard. Silva locks up an arm triangle and York taps out fairly quickly. Great win for Silva. Will Silva ever fight in the UFC? He says he wants to fight the best, the Barnetts and Fedors.
Antz Nansen (1-0) def. Hiroshi Izumi (0-1) by KO
Izumi won the Judo silver medal in the 2004 Olympics. Nansen is a street fighting, Muay Thai, and K-1 legend but is inexperienced in MMA. We have Izumi who is good on the ground going against Nansen who is a great striker. Antz looks very comfortable on his feet and is landing some good leg kicks and some nice punches. Izumi lands a big punch himself. Izumi has a great chin but ate a huge one that puts him on his back. Izumi recovers and tries to take Nansen's back. Nansen gets to his feet and Izumi stands as well. It looks like Izumi is trying to say something to the ref, Nansen closes in and delivers one final blow that puts Izumi on his butt and that's all she wrote. [Blog] Michael Baskis defeats Johnny Bedford in Supreme Warrior Championship main event - full resu...: As part of my "Ultimate MMA Weekend" I attended the Supreme Warrior Championship (www.swcmma.com and www.Friscofights.com) fight card held at the Fieldhouse in Frisco, Texas the night before UFC 103.
Although the event was short on the overall number of fights the amount of talent throughout the card made the event a must see. There were to be seven fights on the evening, but we ended up only getting to see six as one of the competitions ended up getting scratched due to one of the strangest events I have seen at any combative sports event I have attended.
Despite signing a contract to fight at 135 lbs., Travis Woolridge it seems really wanted to find a way out of his fight with Wreck 1 Management's Rafael Casias.
As I entered the back room where the fighters were getting warmed up, there was a lot of commotion going on. Woolridge apparently misplaced his mouthpiece and went to look for it.
Unable to find it, another fighter competing that night gave Woolridge's corner a brand new mouthpiece so the match could take place. As the announcer was getting ready to call out the fighters everyone realized that Woolridge was nowhere to be found.
Another fighter came out of the restroom and told us there was a mouthpiece case in the restroom on the cabinet, and everyone scrambled to find Travis. Woolridge's corner man came back into the warm up area and returned the brand new mouthpiece and informed us that Woolridge would not be fighting that evening.
Despite finding his mouthpiece and being given a new mouthpiece Woolridge chose to leave the event rather than compete. To say that the fighters still in the locker rooms were critical of Woolridge would be an understatement as many of them were calling for Travis to be suspended for a year.
I was later informed that Woolridge had told the promoter that he had a panic attack. There is still no word from the Texas State Athletic Commission if there will be a suspension or not.
As for the rest of the evening the fights went off without a hitch and provided some of the best action I have seen this year. Here are the results and brief recaps of the rest of the fights.
[caption id="attachment_27443" align="alignleft" width="250" caption="Larry Hopkins defeated Terell Brandon Thomas via first round TKO."][/caption]
Larry Hopkins vs Terrell Brandon Thomas:
Thomas wins by TKO in the 1st round when Hopkins could not answer the bell for the 2nd round. I didn't get to catch much of this fight as I was cornering a friend of mine in the next fight, but what little I did see was a fast paced and high impact fight.
[caption id="attachment_27444" align="alignright" width="250" caption="Warren Stewart won a split decision victory over Edwin "Ox" Jones."][/caption]
Edwin "Ox" Jones vs Warren "DaddyDynamite" Stewart:
Stewart wins by split-decision in another reason that everyone always says not to leave it up to the judges. Although I do believe Stewart won the fight, I believe that he won it convincingly as he won two of the rounds without a doubt. I can see the first round going either way, but to award a split decision seems a bit of a reach to me. I will say that I have watched Warren Stewart fight for almost two years now, and he has steadily gotten more impressive as time goes on. He took this fight on short notice and despite normally fighting at 135 or 145 lbs., he chose to compete against a very game Edwin Jones who also used to be a teammate of Stewart's. Stewart was able to bring his record to 12 - 9 (and at only 20 years old), and with a little winning streak Stewart could be getting ready to move up to the WEC or Strikeforce and compete.
[caption id="attachment_27445" align="alignleft" width="250" caption="Frank Ortega won via TKO over Joshua Gerber ten seconds into the second round."][/caption]
Frank Ortega vs Joshua Gerber:
Ortega wins by TKO at the 0:10 mark of the 2nd round.
Again, this was another fight that I didn't get to see much of as I went to the locker room to congratulate Stewart and Jones for their performances, but I was told that Ortega's combinations were as impressive as his trademark mohawk that he sports in his fights.
[caption id="attachment_27446" align="alignright" width="250" caption="Chas Skelly remains undefeated after defeating Daniel Pineda via leg lock."][/caption]
Chas Skelly vs Daniel Pineda:
Bellator Fighting Championships veteran Chas Skelly remains undefeated after taking on a very game Daniel "The Pit" Pineda. Skelly wins by tapout at the 2:12 mark of the 1st round after putting a sick leg lock on Pineda. Definitely submission of the night.
[caption id="attachment_27447" align="alignleft" width="250" caption="Jacob Ortiz won the fight via TKO when Jon Kirk could not answer the bell for the third round."][/caption]
Jon Kirk vs Jacob Ortiz:
After what seemed to be a pretty even contest for of the first two rounds, Ortiz ended the second round on top of Kirk reigning down some vicious ground and pound. Kirk could not answer the bell for the third round and the TKO victory was awarded to Ortiz.
[caption id="attachment_27448" align="alignright" width="250" caption="Michael Baskis defeated Johnny Bedford via guillotine in the third round."][/caption]
Johnny Bedford vs Michael Baskis (Main Event):
This fight had the makings of the fight of the night from the opening bell on. Bedford and Baskis went back and forth for two full rounds and most of the third round as well. Baskis then landed a big punch that looked like it rocked his opponent. Bedford then shot in and ended up getting caught in a guillotine choke as Baskis fell back. Baskis defeats Bedford at the 2:22 mark in the 3rd round via guillotine. Baskis moves his professional record to 5-1 and will now fight Chas Skelly for the 145 lbs. title at SWC 9 "Fire Fight" on October 24th. Bedford, who is the current featherweight champion is relinquishing the title to move to the 135 lbs. bantamweight division from now on. Bedford had already agreed to challenge 135 lbs. champion Stephen Garcia for his title prior to taking this fight with Baskis.

Recap
After last weekend’s performance I was planning on writing about how the bottom finally fell out on me. However, when I reviewed my picks, I only went 14-6 (1NC), which isn’t that terrible. I sort of redeemed myself by going 8-2 (1NC) on the UFC Fight Night 19 card in the middle of the week. Overall my picking record now is 67-17 (9NC), which is an 80% picking rate. It is getting dangerously close to dropped below 80, so this week I need to step it up.
The Fight Club 8 – Salvation
Ryan Ford (9-2) vs. Markhaille Wedderburn
Even though Mark Pavelich thought it was time to give up on Ryan Ford, he is still a very interesting prospect. Sure he has dropped two fights to Pat Healy, but his MMA career is only a little bit past two years old. On top of that, he is a natural athlete who has adapted to the game very well. Expect Ford to dominate Markhaille Wedderburn, and move onto a bigger promotion.
Pick = Ryan Ford
Victor Valimaki (14-5) vs. Lew Polley (10-2)
Two mainstays of the Canadian circuit face off in this match up. Lew Polley will probably come out on top. He has done better against higher level competition, and he trains with American Top Team.
Pick = Lew Polley
Adrenaline MMA 4
Tim Sylvia (24-6) vs. Jason Riley (6-1)
After Tim Sylvia’s last performance, who really knows what to expect from the former UFC champion. Surely, Sylvia can harness his inner James Sendo and become the second man to defeat Jason Riley. If he cannot, he might have a new most embarrassing moment in MMA, and that is saying something for a man who once soiled himself in the Octagon.
Pick = Tim Sylvia
Houston Alexander (8-4) vs. Sherman Pendergarst (11-14)
This will be a quick one. Houston Alexander will come storming across the cage and end the fight quickly. Perdergarst has a losing record overall. He has lost his last five fights. Most importantly, he is 0-1 inside the Yamma.
Pick = Houston Alexander
UFC 103 – Undercard
For UFC 103 main card picks, check out the PRO MMA (promma.info) Staff Picks
Vladimir Matyushenko (22-4) vs. Igor Pokrajac (21-5)
It is nice to see the UFC bringing in some quality European talent. However, on the whole, the European scene is still lacking in general talent. Matyushenko will have the size and wrestling advantage in this fight. Expect a vintage performance from “The Janitor” even though he is quickly approaching 39 years of age.
Pick = Vladimir Matyushenko
Nik Lentz (16-3-1) vs. Rafaello Oliveira (9-1)
Even in his loss to Lyle Beerbohm, Rafaello Oliveira was winning the fight. He is a prospect with next level potential. Nik Lentz is on an impressive winning streak, so this will be an interesting fight. At the end of the fight it will be Oliveira with his hand raised.
Pick = Rafaello Oliveira
Ricky Story (7-3) vs. Brian Foster (12-3)
In his last fight, Brian Foster dominated Kyle Baker. While they are both fighters with good records, it seems as if Foster will have the advantage. Ricky Story stepped into this fight on late notice after Paul Daley moved to the main card.
Pick = Brian Foster
Jim Miller (14-2) vs. Steve Lopez (12-1)
At this point in his career, Jim Miller is only going to have trouble with more physical fighters. He is not going to be out wrestled by Steve Lopez. Look for Miller to control the fight with his grappling and win by second-round submission.
Pick = Jim Miller
Drew McFedries (8-5) vs. Tomasz Drwal (16-2-1)
Tomasz Drwal has four submission wins on his resume. That is more than enough grappling credentials to be considered the favorite in this fight. Let us hope that a Drwal victory finally convinces the UFC to drop Drew McFedries.
Pick = Tomasz Drwal
Eliot Marshall (7-1) vs. Jason Brilz (17-1)
Eliot Marshall is good off of his back, but here he will not be able to pull off a submission. Jason Brilz will continually take the fight to the ground and stay on top enough to win the decision. The question is, does Brilz actually take fighting seriously after some of his recent comments?
Pick = Jason Brilz
Rafael dos Anjos (11-4) vs. Rob Emerson (9-7)
Rob Emerson does not have the wrestling to fend off Rafael dos Anjos’ takedowns. Look for dos Anjos to dominate the fight from the top position and possibly threaten with some submissions.
Pick = Rafael dos Anjos
Ultimate Challenge UK – Mayhem
Kiane Sabet (1-0) vs. Ben Smith (2-3)
Here, a nightclub owner takes on a guy who is 2-3 with his only wins coming against debuting fighters. If there is one thing that Ultimate Challenge UK is good at, it is making sure their favorites do not lose.
Pick = Kiane Sabet
Jungle Fight 14
Assuerio Silva (15-7) vs. Geronimo dos Santos (12-7)
Reports of Assuerio Silva’s demise were based on the fact that Todd Duffee stopped him. We now know that there is no shame in losing to Duffee. Silva has faced the much better competition, and should take this fight.
Pick = Assuerio S... -*http://promma.info/index.php/2009/09/18/the-fight-club-adrenaline-ufc-103-undercard-jungle-fight-and-ultimate-challenge-uk-picks/

[Blog] Thomas Longacre and Travis Calanoc ready to settle local rivalry at Strikeforce Challengers on Sept....: [caption id="attachment_27119" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Thomas Longacre and Travis Calanoc are two undefeated local favorites who will face each other at Strikeforce Challengers."][/caption]
A mixed martial arts (MMA) fight that area fans have been clamoring for will finally transpire on Friday, Sept. 25, when promising, unbeaten local favorites Thomas Longacre and Travis "The Dark Knight'' Calanoc clash in one of the top fights on the Strikeforce Challengers card at SpiritBank Event Center in Tulsa, Okla. (SHOWTIME, 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).
Longacre and Calanoc, both 4-0, are no strangers to each other. They may not be the best of friends, but the talented prospects have trained at the same gym and known each other for years.
Both have lived in or around Tulsa for the majority of their lives. The 31-year-old, 5-foot-8 Longacre was born and raised in Sapulsa, Okla., and went to Kellyville High School in Kellyville, Okla. The 28-year-old, 5-foot-8 Calanoc was born in Anaheim, Calif., but moved to Tulsa when he was an infant. He attended Union High in Tulsa and, later, Tulsa Community College.
"This is a huge fight for Tulsa and one that people have been talking about for a long time,'' said Longacre, who currently resides in Tyler, Tex. "My fights sell out almost every time there and with all the fighters from the area that Strikeforce has put on this card, I can almost guarantee this one will too. Fans are going to come out big time for this.''
Said Calanoc, whose wife also fights MMA: "Longacre and I have always known it was only a matter of time before we'd fight. We've trained some together and both work for LA Boxing. I work for the one in Tulsa. He works for the one in Sherman, Tex.
"Tulsa fans are in for a tremendous fight and a tremendous night. Tulsa fans continue to become more educated about MMA. Sure, they still love the all-out action but now they understand that MMA is more than just getting punched in the face. It's still the most exciting, but it is only a facet of the sport.
"Longacre was already fighting Muay Thai fights before I turned pro, so I've actually watched him fight for real. His standup is very good. So is mine. This definitely has the makings of a stand-up war and is a great, natural fight for the city of Tulsa and SHOWTIME. It could be the fight of the night.''
Longacre wrestled in grade school and junior high but played baseball and football in high school. He had an opportunity to play football at Haskell Indian Junior college, but "it was too far from home, plus I was a mama's boy and wanted to stay close,'' he said.
His foray into the martial arts started with karate. "I was doing OK in karate but one day an instructor said ‘why not do full contact?' so I got into kick-boxing, which I did for seven-eight years. I had about 30 fights in Las Vegas, Texas, Germany and Oklahoma. I fought in Chuck Norris' World Combat League. Then I got into MMA,'' said Longacre, whose parents met at an MMA gym and are still active members.
Longacre made his pro debut in October 2008 and last fought on July 25, 2009. "I love MMA,'' he said. "It doesn't do as much damage to my body as kickboxing. I couldn't walk for two weeks after some kickboxing fights. My shins, knees, everything hurt. But striking is my game in MMA and I'm doing the kicking. So I don't have to worry about taking the same shots. I can fight the next day. Don't get me wrong, MMA is tough, but it is easier on my body.''
On his upcoming encounter with Calanoc, Longacre said, "There's no doubt that Travis is well-rounded, but he doesn't possess the skills in any one area I have to worry about. I don't think he is better than me, or has an advantage where he can overwhelm me in any area.
"It is going to be great fighting again in Tulsa. I will have had more than seven hard weeks of preparation. It's great this fight is televised, but I've fought in front of the TV cameras before. Travis has never fought on TV, much less SHOWTIME, and he is coming off a layoff.
"My engine will be in top gear. He's going to be rusty. I think he should have taken a warm-up fight because he is in for a rude awakening. I've been in wars and had blood all over me. I've been tested multiple times. He's never had a tough fight. His heart hasn't been tested yet. But it will.
"I can't wait to showcase my skills. Getting ready for the fight is the hardest part. The easy part is the fight itself. The one who worked the hardest will win, and no one works harder than me.''
Longacre has been married four years. His wife, Holley, "wants to fight MMA,'' he says, "but I won't let her. She knows a lot, but this is my job.''
Calanoc's wife, Niccali, meantime, does fight MMA. "She started after meeting me,'' Travis said. "Originally she wanted to box but her mother wouldn't let her. But after we started dating, she started training and went from there. We have fought on same card before.
"With her doing a lot of the same things as I do, like going to the gym and dieting, it actually makes things a little easier for her to understand what's going on with me. But watching her fight is very hard for me, more difficult than when I fight. We train together and have the same coaches.
"The Cyborgs made a name for themselves but we have no such aspirations. Our goal is to always try and win our next fight. In training, we try to beat the hell out of each other. It's a different form of marriage counseling,'' he added, jokingly.
Travis Calanoc, who turned pro in December 2004, will be making his first start since July 2008. The interruption in his career was due to military obligations.
"I put my MMA career on hold after 9-11 hit,'' he said, "and enlisted in the Marines. After seeing what had happened, I wanted to give something back, get a piece of it. I volunteered three times to go to Iraq, but I think the only reason they didn't send me was because I was an MMA instructor.
"So I went to Norway and Japan. I've done seven years and am currently stationed in a reserve unit in Broken Arrow, Okla.''
Calanoc, whose four MMA starts took place in Oklahoma, was introduced to the sport at an early age. "I started with the traditional martial arts, taekwondo and jiu-jitsu,'' he said. "My dad was a body builder.''
This is a tough assignment for the comebacking Calanoc, but he'll be prepared. "I am very excited about fighting on SHOWTIME. More people will see me than ever before. This is definitely the biggest fight of my career and I'm hoping to make a good show and give people what they want.
"I won't be boring, that's for sure. It is going to be a war. I prefer to stand and am very aggressive, but I feel I am well-rounded. I try and be as good as everything as I can be.
"I'm looking forward to fighting more consistently now that I have more time to train. Both my wife and I are going to give it our best the next five years and see where it takes us.''
Tickets for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event, priced from $25, are on sale at SpiritBank Event Center box office, all Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and STRIKEFORCE's official website (www.strikeforce.com).

[Blog] M-1 Global officials confirm Fedor Emelianenko's Nov. 7 fight vs. Brett Rogers in the return of MMA to prime time televis...: [caption id="attachment_27098" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers will face off on Nov. 7 somewhere."][/caption]
Amsterdam, Holland -- Officials from CBS announced Thursday that the long-awaited United States return of M-1 Global's Fedor Emelianenko will take place on Saturday, Nov. 7 at a venue to be determined.
M-1 Global (www.M-1Global.com) officials can also confirm that Emelianenko will indeed be taking on undefeated 10-0 top-ten ranked heavyweight Brett Rogers in the main event of the first-ever show to be conducted under a three-fight co-promotion agreement between M-1 Global and Strikeforce.
"We are extremely proud to be working with Scott Coker, Strikeforce, CBS, and SHOWTIME, in what we consider to be a true co-promotional relationship," said President and Founding M-1 Global owner Vadim Finkelchtein. "To be able to bring exposure to the M-1 name in front of such a large American viewing audience on national television is a tremendous achievement for M-1 Global."
The Nov. 7 event will mark the first time a Russian-born mixed martial artist has headlined an MMA event on prime time network television in the U.S. And Emelianenko will be making his U.S. debut against a fighter in Rogers who will go down in history along with Jon Murphy as being the first two fighters ever to compete in a MMA contest on prime time television.
"Brett Rogers knocked out Mr. Murphy in just 1:01 of round 1 in his CBS debut in 2008, so we know he will be a very dangerous and prepared opponent," remarked Finkelchtein. "However, we are always looking for new challenges and Brett Rogers presents a great one for Fedor.
"When we looked at the fan polls in the U.S. this past August, the fight American fans wanted to see most for Fedor was Brett Rogers so it is with great pleasure that we are able to work with Strikeforce and CBS in bringing this fight to the American public at no cost."
Emelianenko is known by many media pundits as just not being the the top heavyweight in the world, but also the top pound-for-pound fighter on the planet. Having already built up a strong fanbase in America, it is anticipated that exposure on network television will propel his stardom to new levels. However, the Stary Oskol native's network TV debut will take place against a 6'5'', 265 pound heavyweight who has stopped all of his opponents inside of two rounds.
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Brett Rogers," said Emelianenko. "He has worked his way from the bottom to the top and his recent win over Andrei Arlovski is very impressive and made him a top-ten heavyweight from the perspective of many people, including me."
Emelianenko is also looking forward to competing on U.S. soil for the first time since his devastating first round knockout victory over Arlovski -- former UFC heavyweight champion -- back in January of this year.
"Of course, after not being able to compete as scheduled in August I am happy for the opportunity to be competing in front of Americans. I have been training hard for this fight and hope to put on a performance that the fans will find satisfactory."
The first-ever co-promotion between M-1 Global and Strikeforce will serve as the first look at Emelianenko for many casual American sports fans. It will be their opportunity to watch the last reigning heavyweight champion of the what was at one time was considered the premier mixed martial arts organization in the world, the Japan-based PRIDE Fighting Championships.
Additionally, Emelianenko also holds the distinction of being the first-ever World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts heavyweight champion and is the proud owner of victories over five former UFC heavyweight champions (Kevin Randleman, Mark Coleman, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Tim Sylvia, and Arlovski).
With an impressive record of 30-1, Emelianenko's lone loss was a controversial defeat suffered in December of 2000 against Tsuyoshi Koshaka. For Emelianenko, the bout against against the former UFC veteran took place in just his fifth-ever fight and was stopped due to a cut from what many considered to be an illegal blow deliver by Koshaka. In the minds of many, Fedor has never truly been defeated.
In addition to his remarkable accomplishment in mixed martial arts, Emelianenko is also a national hero in his home country of Russia. In addition to having served as a member of the Russian Army, he is also a 12-time Russian, European, and World Champion in Combat Sambo, the national martial art of Russia, and also carried the Olympic Torch leading up to the '08 Beijing Games.
Emelianenko also is part-owner with Mr. Finkelchtein of the M-1 Global promotion, a mixed martial arts company that has been in existence for over 10 years and has introduced the sport of MMA to countries all over the world.
M-1 Global currently produces the M-1 Challenge, a year-long, team-based competition featuring 16 teams from all over the world competing for the coveted M-1 Challenge Championship Cup. Referred to by many as the "World Cup of Mixed Martial Arts," one of the 16 teams is Emelianenko's own Team Russian Imperial, which won the 2008 M-1 Challenge Championship Cup in Holland earlier this year.
The M-1 Challenge is televised in over 80 countries and can be seen weekly in the U.S. every Friday at 8 p.m. ET on HDNet. The semifinals of the current season are scheduled to take place Sept. 26 in Rostov, Russia and will feature two teams from the U.S., one from England, as well as one from Russia. The event will be carried live via Internet pay-per-view on both M-1's English language web site www.M-1Global.com and Russian-language site www.Mixfight.ru.

TUF 10: Here We Go!
First I want to say thank you to all of my great friends and family who came out to Buffalo Wild Wings in Fort Worth, Texas last night to support me! It was standing room only. I was able to see life-long friends, and I had an absolute BLAST!
For those people that read the introductory blog, you will know that I have wanted to fight in the UFC since I was a 13 year old kid, sneaking UFC 1-10 into my house and hiding them under my bed! This is all surreal to me, and I am fortunate beyond belief to be fighting for a living, and to have the tremendous amount of supporters I have in my life! Thank you so much to everyone, and thank you to PROMMA.INFO for giving me this opportunity to blog.
As you can tell from the moment I walk through the doors I was stoked; walking into the training center gave me a sense of joy, anticipation, EXCITEMENT, and relief. MMA really is the absolute biggest passion in my life and I am immensely blessed to have been selected to be on the show! Walking in there I was the youngest guy, just having my 22nd birthday, going in as a 10-1 pro, and having the biggest opportunity in my career to date! I think I was smiling ear to ear the entire first several days until my cheeks started to wear out.
When we first arrived at the training center, Dana White had us all line up. I thought he was just welcoming us and getting us ready for tryouts…little did I know, it turned out he had a big announcement. I didn’t even realize that there were only 15 of us lined up….and then Dana announced Kimbo. Instantly I was AMPED UP!! Kimbo is a guy I have been trying to fight since he first stepped into MMA. It seemed that I wasn’t a big enough name to ever earn that fight, but I believe that I would be a bad match up for him. The incident you all saw where Brendan Schaub had some words for Kimbo got me stoked. Now in Brendan’s defense, none of us knew when we were fighting. In fact several guys thought we might have to fight that day. So, Brendan’s words weren’t in disrespect, we just all thought we might have a chance to fight him that day. I also think all of the other 15 fighters might have had some resentment towards Kimbo. He walked into a room of 15 fighters all wanting the contract, and he gets a special announcement.
[caption id="attachment_27078" align="alignright" width="266" caption="Justin recently moved to the mountains of Colorado. Here are some of his new mountain friends."][/caption]
Having said that I am very excited the UFC brought in Kimbo; he is going to bring millions more fans into watch the show. In retrospect, it turned out that Kimbo is a great guy, a determined fighter, a loving father of SIX, and the best darn steak cook I have ever witnessed!
After that we began the tryout process. Looking back now, I would say it was over 2 hours straight of BRUTAL testing from both set of coaches. Rashad’s tryout was based upon more technique and cardio, while Rampage had us do live wrestling and sparring…. ROUND after ROUND after ROUND. My group ended up finishing last, and Brendan, Mike, Darrill and I sparred about 12 rounds each!
After the grueling tryouts, fight picks were AWESOME. I was chosen to be on the team I wanted, and the team I am training with currently! During tryouts, I told Greg Jackson multiple times “Pick me Greg, please pick me!” haha and I am very thankful that I got to work with Rashad and his team the entire 6 weeks. Now I’m in Denver, training with the likes of Carwin, Marquardt, Schaub, Marshall, Ludwig and other great guys at Grudge Training Center. It is a Greg Jackson affiliate and we all alternate between Denver and Albuquerque; 4 weeks in Albuquerque, 4 weeks in Denver, for fight camps, 8 weeks out from our fights.
Moving into the house was nuts; it’s the same house since season 8, and this year upstairs was “Heaven” themed and downstairs was “Hell.” Scott “Punk Haole” Junk and I have become very good friends and before the show, we decided to be roommates. We ran downstairs to the first room we saw with two beds and snagged it...The only thing I regret was it was “Hell” themed and I had to sleep with an extremely creepy Medusa painting starring at me for 6 weeks straight!
The fight picks really surprised us by Rampage; we all thought a wrestler, for Abe, was his absolute worst match up. Rampage basically handed us the 3rd fight pick on a silver platter (Rampage has to win the first two fights to keep control)! Jon went in there and did work, got down to business and did exactly what he had to do to win.
After the fight, I went to check on Abe. As it would turn out, the Doc said he LOST count at over 200 stitches! That was the absolute nastiest cut I have ever witnessed and it definitely did remind me of a horror movie, as I said on the show. While Abe was getting stitched up the doc spread the cut open and I swear I saw about 3-4 inches of that dudes skull…. NASTY!
Well I am extremely excited about the rest of the show! I am very thankful for the opportunity that PROMMA.INFO has given me! I can’t wait for the rest to unfold and honestly if my face looked like “a kid in a candy store” it is because that’s the way I felt! This season will be the best season yet… and I am very blessed to have been a part of it!
