[Blog] Couture signs new six-fight contract and other notes from the UFC 102 post-fight press confere...: [caption id="attachment_25854" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Photo by: Dave Mandel / Sherdog - Minotauro was in top form Saturday night as he defeated Randy Couture by unanimous decision."][/caption]
Here are some of the highlights from the UFC 102 post-fight press conference. Probably the biggest announcement was that Randy Couture signed a new six-fight contract.
UFC 102 was one of the top five largest gates in Oregon history. The event did not sell it out. Dana said they made a mistake and mis-priced tickets for their first time there.
Dana is not sure yet if Marquardt will get another shot at Anderson Silva or if he will battle Henderson for a number one contender match.
Nate Marquardt said this was the best finish of his UFC career.
Dana said he likes Todd Duffee cause he said he wants to get right back in there against top competition.
Dana said Brock was cheering for Randy, and if Randy won he wanted to fight him again.
Brandon Vera said he was not happy because his fight went to a decision. He said he was trying to prove a point and finish him just with his hands and not use kicks. Vera said Soszynski is "Teflon tough."
Randy has a huge hematoma under his left eye but seems in good spirits.
Randy Couture just signed a new contract on Saturday with 28 months and six more fights. Wow! This guy is going to be fighting at 50-years-old, or damn close to it anyway.
Randy did not feel he won the decision. He felt Minotauro won all three rounds.
Randy said he wants to fight interesting fights whether it is at light-heavyweight or heavyweight.
Dana said once Chuck Liddell "is finished dancing," I'm sure he'll be looking for me (to put together a fight). He said Chuck was texting him all night saying he wanted to fight.
Couture was asked what his motivation was for signing such a lengthy contract before his fight. "The opportunity to stay with the organization is the motivation," Randy said. "I intend to finish my career here with the UFC."
Dana White said Randy can fight at light heavyweight or heavyweight. "He can do whatever he wants to do," said Dana Wh... -*http://promma.info/index.php/2009/08/29/couture-signs-new-six-fight-contract-and-other-notes-from-the-ufc-102-post-fight-press-conference/

[Blog] World Combat Sports Challenge presents "Female Fury II" - First all-female Muay Thai / MMA card in California hist...: San Francisco, CA (USA): World Combat Sports Challenge (WCSC), a rising fight promotion based in the Bay Area, is proud to present the first-ever all-female Muay Thai/mixed martial arts event in California history, as “FEMALE FURY II” takes place on Saturday, September 19th at the historic Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco, CA. Many Muay Thai and MMA world championships will be decided on this hybrid fight card, and Doors will open at 5 PM, and the fights will start at 6 PM. The match-ups are still being developed, but several outstanding female fighters have already been signed for the event, including:
The main event will feature WCSC Muay Thai Bantamweight World Title-holder Jenna Castillo defending her belt
The WCSC California State MMA Lightweight Championship being contested by Jamie Seaton and a fighter TBD
Marisella Badillo in a WCSC Muay Thai Flyweight World title defense
Jade Hayes making her lightweight MMA debut
Aby Ruloda in a WCSC California State Muay Thai Flyweight belt defense
Jill Guido fighting for the WCSC United States Muay Thai Bantamweight strap
Malia Spanyol fighting for the vacant WCSC California State Muay Thai Bantamweight title
Naline Sar in a battle for the WCSC California State Muay Thai Flyweight belt
Crowd favorite Amber Pope defending her WCSC California State Muay Thai Lightweight title
WCSC’s last event, “THE AWAKENING,” drew over 4,000 fight fans to Kezar, and featured hot MMA and Muay Thai action. With the success of last year’s “FEMALE FURY I” this event promises to deliver twice the action and excitement, as we introduce women’s MMA to the signature WCSC 5-rope ring. Fight fans of all combat disciplines will be entertained solely by the females this time, as the girls look to make their mark at “FEMALE FURY II.” Known for pioneering fight events in the Muay Thai and MMA industries, such as the first all-female Muay Thai card in “FEMALE FURY I” back in 2008, this next WCSC event will quench the thirst of action fans in the Bay Area.
WCSC Owner/Promoter Mike Espinoza said, “We look forward to this event with great enthusiasm, as it will be the first show of its kind in the state of California, and will showcase the best in women’s combat sports competition. We thank everyone for their support as we launch women’s MMA and Muay Thai into the future.”
World Combat Sports Challenge has been promoting martial arts in the Bay Area for over 20 years. Since its inception, WCSC has staged several exciting events, such as 2008's “BEST OF THE BAY.” For ticket information regarding the September 19th, 2009 event “FEMALE FURY II,” please visit the World Combat Sports Challenge website at http://www.worldcsc.com/ or Virtual Box Office at http://www.virtualboxoffice.com/

[Blog] Intense Amoussou / Doyle staredown highlights "HDNet Fights Presents M-1 Breakthrough" weigh-...: Kansas City, Missouri - Considered by many pundits to be nothing more than an opponent for Karl "Psycho" Amoussou, John "The Iron Bull" Doyle sent a message Thursday afternoon during weigh-ins for "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 BREAKTHROUGH" that he did not venture to Kansas City to lose.
Amoussou vs. Doyle will be just one of seven total bouts to be featured during Friday's HDNet telecast (10 p.m. ET) that will emanate from the historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City (tickets still available at Ticketmaster.com).
After weighing in, both Doyle and Amoussou were asked to partake in a pre-fight stare down intended as nothing more than a photo opportunity. However, what ensued was nearly a premature start to "Breakthrough," with Amoussou and Doyle looking eager to lock horns a day early.
Amoussou, voted Sherdog.com's number one European MMA prospect, tried to psyche out Doyle much in the way that his idol, former PRIDE middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva, used to try to intimidate his opposition. However, when Amoussou pushed his forehead into Doyle's, the resurgent "Iron Bull" informed Amoussou that he didn't want to be touched.
A second attempt was made to take a face off photo but Amoussou once again tried to get into Doyle's head. With Amoussou not heeding his call, Doyle jammed his forehead into Amoussou before M-1 Global officials ended the photo opportunity early.
Amoussou is a French phenom who serves as an undercover police officer in his native France. With many International viewers not having access to HDNet, www.M-1Global.com is offering a special Internet pay-per-view stream (to order, simply visit M-1Global.com).
With the exception of three fighters, all of the combatants scheduled to compete on Friday successfully made weight. Spanish fighter Rogent Lloret, who will headline "Breakthrough's" undercard during a free Sherdog.com stream (8:15 p.m. ET), was granted permission to weigh-in on Friday after visa problems delayed his arrival to the U.S.
Additionally, former Tunisian Olympian Ferrid "The Hurricane" Kheder weighed in at 159 lbs, four pounds over the contracted lightweight limit for his bout against DREAM veteran Daisuke Nakamura. Despite Kheder's inability to make weight after having his flight from Los Angeles canceled Wednesday night, Nakamura did not let those expecting Nakamura vs. Kheder to steal tomorrow's show down, as he accepted the fight. For his troubles, Nakamura will receive 10% of Kheder's purse.
All remaining fighters made weight, including the headliners for "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 BREAKTHROUGH," "King" Mo Lawal and Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr. Kerr, once considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world is making one last attempt at a comeback in hopes of re-writing an infamous legacy. That legacy was chronicled in the critically acclaimed HBO documentary The Smashing Machine.
In addition to Lawal vs. Kerr, "Breakthrough" will also feature a special sparring exhibition between M-1 fighters "The Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko and newly-crowned Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi.
Below are complete results of today's weigh-in:
12. Heavyweight (3×5): Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal (219 lbs.) vs. Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr (263 lbs.)

* Denotes fight changed from 155 lbs. to catchweight of 159 lbs. with Nakamura receiving 10% of Kheder's purse
** Denotes that due to visa issues, Lloret will be allowed to weigh-in Friday.
*** Denotes that bout changed to catchweight of 155 lbs. and that fight has been changed from pro status to amateur status.

[Blog] Karo Parisyan expected to make return to the Octagon at UFC 106 against Dustin Hazel...: [caption id="attachment_25457" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Karo Parisyan is set to take on Dustin Hazelett at UFC 106 on Nov. 21, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nev."][/caption]
Another fight has been added to the UFC 106 card which is headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin. Following a nine month suspension, Karo Parisyan will return to action for his second time this year to face Team Jorge Gurgel BJJ specialist Dustin Hazelett.
It could be said UFC veteran Karo Parisyan (18-5) is skating on thin ice. Although the Armenian American has been a staple of the Ultimate Fighting Championship since UFC 44 in 2003, he lost his lone 2008 fight via TKO to Thiago Alves, and then tested positive for painkillers following next fight in Jan. 2009 against Dong Hyun Kim, causing his split decision win to be overturned and ruled a no-contest.
Dustin Hazelett's (12-4) last fight ended in a reverse arm bar submission victory over Tamadan McCrory at UFC 91. Prior to that, he had notable wins over Josh Burkman and Jonathan Goulet. Now 5-2 in his UFC career, a win over Parisyan would boost Hazelett's stock considerably.
"McLovin" was supposed to fight at UFC 96 against Ben Saunders but suffered an ACL injury. If everything goes well, and Hazelett's knee holds up for the UFC 106 event set for Nov. 21, it will be his first fight in just over a year.
Parisyan vs. Hazelett is an interesting match up of styles. Both fighters have nine submission victories on their record. Parisyan has no wins by TKO or KO, and Hazelett only has one. However, one would be hard-pressed to find an MMA fan who considered either fighter boring.
Although none of these fights have been officially announced by the organization, the UFC 106 fight card scheduled to take place at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas looks like this so far: (HW Title Fight) Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin, Tito Ortiz vs. Mark Coleman, Jon Fitch vs. Ricardo Almeida and Karo Parisyan vs. Dustin Hazelett.

[Blog] Undefeated fighters Issac De Jesus and Brandon Visher to meet in "Up N Up" main event in Honolulu on Sept....: HONOLULU, HI August 25, 2009 - Undefeated rising mixed martial arts (MMA) star Issac De Jesus (11-0) from Stockton, California, will replace injured Eddie Yagin in the Up N Up Main Event bout with Hawaii’s top ranked and also undefeated champion Brandon Visher (15-0) from Kula, Maui at the Neil Blaisdell Center in Honolulu Hawaii on Saturday, September 12th.
The flawless record of Brandon Visher will truly be tested in this amazing match up with Strikeforce veteran Issac De Jesus. Both fighters have no blemishes on their record, this fight will ensure that someone’s “0” must go.
BRANDON VISHER: “I expect him to come into this fight in shape, strong and ready to leave undefeated but I'm willing to do the same. Hopefully he brings it. ...lets hope he's ready for a warm 808 welcome. ...bring your best I'll bring mine and Aloha!”
ISSAC DE JESUS: “I expect him to come out proud….but I’m a surprising fighter and I’m coming in there for the same reasons he is. There’s a belt on the line. I’m undefeated and I don’t want to loose.”
VIDEO INTERVIEW: CLICK HERE
Another one of Hawaii’s top ranked fighters, Mark Oshiro, will be taking on Felipe Chavez who is a younger relative to the UFC powerhouse Diego Sanchez. Oshiro has proven himself to be “the” man to beat in Hawaii as a veteran of EliteXC and Icon Sport. This should be a true test for both men on September 12th.
Undefeated Koa Ramos will be taking on Hawaii’s #1 ranked Dylan Clay on the Up N Up main card. Ramos has made a splash in Hawaii with dominating performances in X-1 and Icon Sport while Dylan Clay has also been making his force known through X-1 and M-1. Both are highly regarded in Hawaii and this fight will solidify who deserves to be on top of the rankings in the 170lbs division.
Rounding out the Marquee card is Harris Sarmiento vs. Michael Brightmon. The touted technical skills of Sarmiento will clash with the brute force of Brightmon in this extremely anticipated bout that will no doubt please the fans. Sarmiento is a true veteran of MMA fighting such names as Nick Diaz, Jason Dent, KJ Noons, Roger Huerta, Shane Nelson, Gilbert Melendez, Josh Thomson and Billy Evangelista. With wins over former WEC Champ “Razor” Rob McCullough. Brightmon is an unbeaten powerhouse who is a definite up and comer in the sport who took out UFC veteran Anthony Torres.
The Up N Up event at the Neil Blaisdell Center on September 12th is stacked with some of the best MMA fights a fan could ask for.
Tickets for the event, priced from $15, are on sale at the Blaisdell Arena box office, all Times Supermarket locations (1-800-745-3000), and Ticketmaster online (www.Ticketmaster.com) http://www.ticketmaster.com/Up-N-Up-Extreme-Cage-Fighting-tickets/artist/1353209

NEW YORK (August 24, 2009) -- K-1 legend and five-time world kickboxing champion, Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo (1-0), will make his STRIKEFORCE mixed martial arts (MMA) debut when he takes on Kevin “The Shaman” Jordan (11-7) in a heavyweight contest on the SHOWTIME televised portion of the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event at Tulsa, Oklahoma’s SpiritBank Event Center on Friday, Sept. 25.
The 38-year-old Sefo, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 250 pounds, boasts the highest KO percentage in K-1’s 16 year history. In 2007, he relocated from his native New Zealand to Las Vegas, Nev., and adopted Randy “The Natural” Couture’s Xtreme Couture camp as his new training ground.
A Muay Thai stylist known for his punishing leg kicks and a steel chin, Sefo has made eight trips to the K-1 “World Grand Prix Finals,” an annual, year-end tournament that pits the world’s top eight heavyweight kickboxers against one another in a single-elimination tournament completed over the course of one night. During a 14-year professional kickboxing career, he has conquered a number of fellow all-time greats, including three-time World Grand Prix Finals” tournament champion, Peter Aerts; two-time K-1 tournament winner, Jerome LeBanner; and former World Boxing Federation champion and three-time world kickboxing champion, Mike Bernardo.
In his sole MMA appearance, Sefo stopped Min Soo Kim with a high kick in the second round (:30) of their K-1 “Hero’s 2” matchup in Japan on July 6, 2005.
Also 38 years of age, Jordan is a nine-year veteran of MMA who has made two appearances in UFC competition. In his last effort, the 6 foot 3 inch, 245-pound Jordan earned a unanimous decision victory over MMA pioneer and UFC 2 runner up Patrick Smith, in Salem, New Hampshire, on July 31, 2009.
Born in Alabama, Jordan recently move to Cortland, N.Y., from Columbus, Georgia, where he spent nearly 10 years training United States Army personnel stationed at nearby Fort Benning in the military martial arts system called Modern Army Combatives.

Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and STRIKEFORCE’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).

[Blog] "Psycho" Amoussou ready to make his name in the U.S. on Aug. 28 at "HDNet Fights Presents M-1 Global Breakthrou...: [caption id="attachment_25174" align="alignright" width="192" caption="Karl "Psycho" Amoussou will fight John Doyle on Aug. 28"][/caption]Amsterdam, Holland -- Voted by Sherdog.com as the number one European MMA prospect, Frenchmen Karl "Psycho" Amoussou is no secret to die-hard MMA fans.
For the past year and a half, Amoussou has been a staple of M-1's M-1 Challenge telecasts on HDNet each and every Friday night. But for the first time ever on Friday, Aug. 28, Amoussou will look to take his career to new heights when he competes on live television in the U.S. for the first time ever.
"I've already fought in Kansas City during last year's M-1 Challenge against Korea but I'm very proud to fight again in the us," Amoussou said during an exclusive interview with M-1Global.com. "The U.S. is a great country. I'm back and I announce that I'll come back a lot of times because there are lots of fighters who fight in American organizations that I have to knock out."
Originally scheduled to fight former BodogFIGHT welterweight champion Nick Thompson, Amoussou recently learned he will instead face resurgent M-1 Challenge fighter John "The Iron Bull" Doyle during "HDNET PRESENTS M-1 GLOBAL BREAKTHROUGH."
Preparing for a new opponent on Amoussou should be not be difficult for a fighter that Wanderlei Silva has branded "the future of MMA." Nicknamed "The Psycho" for his tactics of psychological warfare outside of the ring and his devastating style of fighting inside of it, Amoussou is receiving elite-level training as he finds himself on the cusp of superstardom. Originally trained by his brother, former PRIDE fighter Bertrand Amoussou, Amoussou now works with Jean Marie Merchet of High Tension.
"Bertrand was my trainer during my finals year in judo and then and in my early years of MMA," he said when asked how his brother has impacted his career. "He showed me great judo and grappling techniques and helped me win my first fights. He is huge in grappling.
"However, for the last year and a half he hasn't been my trainer. My trainer is now Jean Marie Merchet and my team is Haute Tension (High Tension). He has helped develop my muay thai skills."
Amoussou is a one of the more distinguished fighters in the sport and has drawn comparisons to one of his idols, the aforementioned Silva. But Amoussou is also a distinguished figure outside of the ring, with his full-time job in his native France being that of a police officer.
"I work as a policeman in a special group against criminality and drugs," Amoussou responded when asked about his law enforcement background. "I don't have a uniform, I'm wearing my daily clothes to be discreet."
While Amoussou spends his time in deep cover, it is becoming increasingly hard for him to protect his identity.
"Last week I caught a guy - once he had been handcuffed he told me: ‘Hey Psycho, I didn't try to escape because I've seen your videos on YouTube and I'm not crazy.'"

[Blog] Undefeated Zak Cummings replaces injured Evangelista Cyborg in Strikeforce Challengers main event fight with Tim Kennedy on Sept....: [caption id="" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Zak Cummings (pictured above) will face Tim Kennedy at Strikeforce Challengers on Sept. 25"][/caption]NEW YORK (August 20, 2009)—Undefeated rising mixed martial arts (MMA) star Zak Cummings (10-0) will replace an injured Evangelista Cyborg in the STRIKEFORCE Challengers main event matchup with American military hero Tim Kennedy (10-2) at Tulsa, Oklahoma’s SpiritBank Event Center on Friday, September 25.
“Tim Kennedy sounds like a pretty tough guy and that’s the way I like to fight so it should be a great fight,” said the 25-year-old Cummings, a two-time national junior collegiate qualifier in wrestling for St. Louis Community College – Meramec.
A knee injury forced Cummings to withdraw before the start of the 2006 national tournament and, later, convinced him to return home to Springfield, Missouri where he discovered MMA. He has since regained his health and become well-skilled in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing.
Despite his newfound versatility, Cummings credits his untainted success first and foremost to his consistent composure in the cage.
“Some guys get very emotional and some guys want to go out there and hurt people. I’m one of those guys that looks at MMA as a sport and a chess match, just like I look at wrestling,” he explained. “In all my wrestling experiences, I stayed calm throughout any situation that happened. I didn’t get frustrated and I think that’s carried over into my experience in this sport. I keep my cool really well and it’s paid off.”
The 29-year-old Kennedy’s return to action will be his first since he dominated Nick “The Goat” Thompson, stopping Thompson on the ground with an onslaught of punches in the second round (2:37) of their STRIKEFORCE Challengers meeting at ShoWare Center in Kent, Washington.
After spending six years in The United States Army, the last three as a sniper in the Seventh Special Forces Group, Kennedy, a native of San Luis Obispo, California, recently accepted an offer to serve in the Texas National Guard. The career change will allow him the flexibility he needs to pursue his MMA career at a world-class level.
“I don’t think anybody can really plan to see what I’m coming in to do this time,” said Kennedy. “I’m working with the best boxing coaches and training with Mark DeLaGrotte, one of the best MMA striking coaches in the world, so I think that people are going to see a new Tim that they’ve never seen before.”
A graduate of Columbia College in Missouri, Kennedy launched his professional MMA career shortly before enlisting in the military near the end of 2001.
“After 9/11 happened, I wanted to do something for my country,” he explained. “The military is my life. I am going to serve as long as they’ll let me. I’d love to retire in uniform.”
A knee injury Cyborg sustained during a training session last week forced the Brazilian fighter to pull out of the bout with Kennedy.
Tickets for the event, priced from $25, are on sale at the SpiritBank Event Center box office, all
Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and STRIKEFORCE’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).
SpiritBank Event Center doors will open at 7:15 p.m. CT for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event and the first preliminary bout will begin at 8:00 p.m.
The live SHOWTIME telecast, which will include up to five bouts, will begin at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).
World championship MMA promotion STRIKEFORCE will produce the event at SpiritBank Event Center along with eXtreme Fighting promoter and five-time world kickboxing champion Dale “Apollo” Cook.
STRIKEFORCE Challengers is a proving ground for up-and-coming MMA fighters. The series is designed to provide today’s top prospects with the opportunity to step-up their level of competition and demonstrate their ability in a nationally televised event.

[Blog] New video chronicles Mo Lawal's U.S. homecoming at "HDNet Fights Presents M-1 Global Breakthrou...: As an amateur wrestler in the United States, Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal was a former NCAA Champion, a former NCAA All-American, and a one-time Olympic hopeful. However, to die-hard mixed martial arts fans, Lawal has become known as a future MMA mega-star thanks to his 4-0 pro MMA record that has been compiled in Japan. But on Friday, Aug. 28 in Kansas City at the historic Memorial Hall and live on HDNet, Lawal will fight for the first time on U.S. soil against former NCAA Champion Mark Kerr at "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 GLOBAL BREAKTHROUGH."
After being upset in his bid to represent the U.S. during the 2008 Beijing Games, Lawal turned is focus to MMA and made a stunning debut under the Sengoku banner. Facing the vastly bigger and more experienced Travis Wiuff, Lawal needed just two minutes and 11 seconds to TKO the former YAMMA heavyweight champion.
Since the Wiuff fight, it's been all uphill for Lawal with the exception of a minor speed bump. With expectations growing, some pundits expressed disappointment that Lawal was unable to finish Ryo Kawamura in his last fight this past March and instead was only able to win via decision.
Soon after the fight it was revealed that Lawal competed on a torn ACL and that the injury would require surgery. While the procedure that Lawal underwent would normally sideline a fighter for up to a year, Lawal is attempting to come back in just six months.
Lawal's comeback from surgery and U.S. homecoming have been chronicled in a brand new viral documentary-style video directed by E. Casey Leydon of AllElbows.com. In the video, concerns about Lawal's knee and the size advantage of Kerr will have at "Breakthrough" are both addressed.

[Blog] Nick Thompson's misfortune creates opportunity for John Doyle at "HDNet Fights presents M-1 Global Breakthrou...: [caption id="attachment_25081" align="alignright" width="273" caption="Photo: M-1Global.com - John Doyle will replace Nick Thompson to fight Karl Amoussou at "M-1 Global Breakthrough" on Aug. 28."][/caption]
Amsterdam, Holland -- Another significant change has been made to next Friday's "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 GLOBAL BREAKTHROUGH" telecast (live at 10 p.m. ET), with "The Iron Bull" John Doyle stepping in to fight Karl Amoussou on Aug. 28 in Kansas City at the historic Memorial Hall (tickets available at Ticketmaster.com and all local Ticketmaster outlets) following an injury to Nick Thompson.
"Nick was sparring very hard on Monday and sustained a cut," said M-1 Global (www.M-1Global.com) Vice President of Live Events Joe Kelly. "Nick alerted us immediately, and like a true fighter he had the cut glued instead of immediately getting stitches. He did everything in his power not to pull out of this fight and kept us informed all day. However, in the end, his doctor wouldn't clear him to fight. It's unfortunate but fighter safety always comes first."
With Thompson out, Doyle will be allowed to continue his resurgence. Once a top light heavyweight prospect who began his career with a 6-1 record and a Combat in the Cage 205 lbs. title, Doyle had been heavily recruited by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. However, Doyle began to believe his own hype and cut back on his training while accepting short-notice fights against top competitors such Rafael Feijao, Sean Salmon, Ricardo Romero.
"People will point to John's recent record, but the reality is that not many people were willing to fight Karl on two months notice," said Kelly. "Finding a guy on two weeks notice? Well, we know John Doyle is a true warrior and has never backed down from a challenge. True to form, John has stepped up yet again. He earned his nickname for a reason and what a lot of people don't realize, John is a much better fighter than he was when he fought Feijao."
After a brief retirement, Doyle is back and is 2-1 in his last three fights. His only loss came in his M-1 debut this past June in Kansas City. Facing Extreme Challenge middleweight champion Ryan Sturdy, Doyle lost a two-round split decision that some considered to be controversial.
"John took the fight on 24 hours notice," Kelly began. "He flew out from Philadelphia on Friday morning, weighed in during the afternoon, and then fought that same night. Despite all of that, John still won 'Fight of the Night' honors. And while the fight is listed as a loss, I don't know many people who felt Doyle lost that fight. At the very least it should have went to a third overtime round."
Doyle's last fight took place this past Sunday in Holland against Team Benelux's Richard Plug. Representing USA East in the M-1 Challenge, Doyle helped the team qualify for the playoffs with a dominant two round victory over Plug. With momentum on his side again, there are questions whether Doyle's decision to take on a fighter in Amoussou that was voted the number one European MMA prospect by Sherdog.com is a prudent one.
"In the past, I've made some bad decisions," Doyle acknowledged. "I accepted offers without asking questions because I simply enjoy fighting. I took fights on short notice without having trained but this is a different situation. This time I had my management and trainers talk about this fight and whether it was the right decision. In the end, we all decided that I have nothing to lose and everything to gain."
Doyle received national attention in 2008 following a first round knockout loss to Anderson Silva protege Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante. Offered a chance to compete for EliteXC during its Internet telecast, he took the fight on 10 days notice without having had a proper training camp. Could history be repeating itself?
"This isn't the same situation as Feijao," Doyle responded. "That fight was at light heavyweight and now I am at middleweight -- the weight I should have been fighting at from the start. I also took that fight on 10-days notice and barely trained. But I am in great shape and at the end of the day, while Karl is very good and has a bright future ahead of him, he's not Feijao."
Doyle is well aware of Amoussou's reputation as a feared striker but feels his career is back on track and that the chance to compete in a nationally televised bout on HDNet was too good to pass up.
"Hey, I know M-1 probably sees me as nothing more than an opponent for Karl," said Doyle. "I know they want him to be their franchise player. But it's all good because if I pull of this upset, M-1 and I can still sit down on Saturday morning and we can talk about my future."
Amoussou has been well-promoted in Europe and is an opponent that very few fighters have been willing to take on during the last 12 months. Having earned the nickname "Psycho" for his intimidating presence that often includes wearing masks to the ring, Amoussou has been known to psyche out some of his opponents before the fight even starts.
"I think Karl is an entertaining fighter and a dangerous striker," said Doyle. "I know he's a threat. But I'm a threat to him as well. As far as his attempts at psychological warfare, I think it looks great to the fans but it will have no effect on me. I know he's going to mean mug me at the weigh-ins and try and stare me down before the bell rings. But what he needs to understand is that I spent a lot of time growing up in Philly and Newark -- two of the most dangerous towns in America. The only way I am going to be intimidated by his mask is if he brings a gun with him to the ring as well. But unless the Kansas Boxing Commission has made drastic changes to their rules since the last time I fought there, I don't think I am going to have to worry about that."
While some fans will be disappointed to hear the news that the night's co-main event between Amoussou and Thompson is off, Doyle seemed unconcerned about any negative feedback that might be directed his way.
"I don't care about the haters," he remarked, "I spent a lot of time in Philly and Rocky Balboa has a lot of sentimental meaning to me. Apollo Creed gave Rocky an opportunity of a lifetime. After I beat Richard Plug, I did a post-fight interview and said I wanted to be the best middleweight in M-1 and fight whomever they felt was their best 185'er. Well, M-1 has now given me an opportunity of a lifetime. If someone has a problem with me accepting an opportunity, they can tune into HDNet on Friday, August 28, and I'll show them what's up."
In addition to the live U.S. television debut of Amoussou, "Breakthrough" will also feature the U.S. debut of former NCAA champion "King" Mo Lawal vs. MMA pioneer Mark Kerr as well as a special exhibition sparring match between former PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko and newly-crowned Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi.
[Blog] Russia Legion and USA East join USA West and Team England in M-1 Challenge semi-fin...: [caption id="" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Photo: M-1Global.com - Russia Legion's Magomed Shihshabekov helped his team sweep Turkey 5-0."][/caption]
Hilversum, Holland -- With the completion of its eighth and final regular season event of the 2009 "M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction," the final playoff field of four has been set. Both Russia Legion and USA East qualified for the playoffs on Sunday night at Studio 22 in Hilversum and will be heading to the M-1 Challenge semifinals on Sept. 26 in Russia.
Russia Legion won Group D following its 5-0 sweep of Team Turkey. Led by welterweight Magomed Shihshabekov, voted the eighth best European MMA prospect by Sherdog.com, Legion won all of its matchups inside the distance. With the flawless victory, Legion finishes the 2009 regular season with a perfect 3-0 team record and an individual record of 13-2.
USA East took a less conventional approach to earning its playoff berth by winning the Group C title in spite of losing 3-2 to host country Team Benelux. After following behind early 0-1 after Benelux lightweight Danny van Bergen TKO'd David Zitnik via strikes at 2:07 of round 1, USA East welterweight Shamar Bailey and middleweight John Doyle earned dominating victories over Raymond Jarman and Richard Plug, respectively, to give USA East a 2-1 advantage. However, both light heavyweight Mike Connors -- who accepted his fight on seven days notice after Logan Clark pulled out with a knee injury -- and heavyweight Chuck Grigsby lost, Benelux was able to walk away with a 3-2 team victory.
With the loss, USA East became tied in the team victories category with Team Finland. The teams remained deadlocked in the standings following the use of M-1's first tie-breaker with individual wins. However, M-1 officials ruled that USA East would go onto the semifinals in Russia based on the second tie-breaker of head-to-head victories, as USA East defeated Finland by a 3-2 margin in Kansas City on June 5.
With the final four playoff teams set, M-1 officially announced Sunday night that Team USA East will take on Team USA West in one semifinal matchup with Russia Legion going head-to-head with Team England.

[Blog] Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos pounds out Gina Carano to become first Strikeforce 145-pound female champ...: [caption id="attachment_24928" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Photo by: Esther Lin/Strikeforce"][/caption]
With just one second left in the first round, Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos defeated the so-called "face of women's MMA" Gina "Conviction" Carano Saturday night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. to become the very first Strikeforce 145 lbs. female champion.
Carano tried to hang tough with the Brazilian bomber but the power of Santos proved to be too much for the pretty Muay Thai striker. Santos overwhelmed Carano every time she put hands on her, causing "Conviction" to cover up and go into defense mode.
Carano did find herself in advantageous positions a couple of times during the bout. Santos went for a takedown but Carano ended up on top of Santos. Surprisingly, instead of trying any ground and pound techniques, Carano chose to stand and let her opponent up. Carano clearly thought her advantage would be on the feet.
Carano may have more technically sound striking, but the power of Santos far outweighs any technical deficiency she may or may not have. It is probably safe to say Gina Carano has never been hit as hard by a woman as she was tonight.
As the five-minute first round came to a close, Santos took Carano to the ground, postured up and pounded on her until the referee was forced to intervene. There was no complaint of an early stoppage here, and it took Carano a few moments to get up from the canvas.
The fight ended pretty much like many thought it would, with Santos the winner. However, it was probably over a little faster than most anticipated. Now Strikeforce is faced with the unique challenge of finding females who are not only willing, but worthy to get in the cage with Cyborg.

[Blog] From the "Land of the Rising Sun": A talk with Roxanne Modafferi, a PRO MMA exclusiv...: Times are changing for women’s mixed martial arts.
It’s rare enough to see a woman’s fight headlining a show at any level in MMA, and yet this weekend we get to see just that, with Strikeforce stepping up to the plate with multiple title fights on their big August 15th card, anchored by the main event between Gina Carano, and Chris “Cyborg” Santos.
One of MMA’s top female fighters, Roxanne Modafferi (13-4-0) knows the significance of the bout first hand.
“I think this is huge for women's MMA because the general public is now exposed to high-level professional women fighters.” Modafferi told PRO MMA (promma.info)
“I hope it's a good exciting back-and-forth fight which will prove to many skeptics that not only can women fight, but that we aren't delicate dolls that will break."
Women are constantly battling those exact stereotypes every time they step into a ring or cage to engage in combat.
“We are not only fighting our opponents, but fighting for a place, or position, in this sport.” Modafferi said.
A self proclaimed “mat rat”, a young Modafferi participated and excelled in multiple martial art disciplines, starting with taekwondo, then moving to Kempo, judo, and then jiu jitsu.
As her love for grappling and competing grew, Modafferi dreamed of being the first woman to fight in the UFC. Although the UFC has not embraced and added a woman’s division at this time, organizations such as Strikeforce and Bellator are raising the bar with exposure for the women.
Roxanne has stepped into the cage and battled MMA stars such as Tara LaRosa (17-1-0) and Shayna Baszler (9-6-0), boasting a 13-4 record as a pro fighter, but has yet to fight in 2009 due to limited opportunities for her to showcase her skills in the ring or cage.
A loss to Baszler has served as a constant motivating factor in Modafferi’s career, but Baszler is just one of the fighters on her list.
“I'm chomping at the bit to avenge myself.” Modafferi said. “I also want to rematch Tara Larosa, and I want to fight Amanda Buckner (11-5-1) and Sarah Kaufman (10-0-0).”
Most of the female fighters are cordial or even friendly outside of the cage or ring, and Modafferi counts many of the other fighters as friends.
“I'm friendly with most other female fighters, to be honest.” Modafferi told PRO MMA (promma.info). “I chat with Tara LaRosa on the phone sometimes, even while plotting how I'm gonna kick her butt someday. I'm sure she's thinking the same thing. It's great!"
As women’s MMA continues to garner much praise, and ever growing popularity in the U.S., the support for the ladies has come at a far slower pace overseas and in particular, in Japan.
Roxanne contributes this issue to one of culture, and although the sport has been around longer in Japan, women’s MMA is growing at a far faster pace in the U.S. then abroad.
Japan is slightly behind with stereotypes for women compared to the West.” Modafferi told PRO MMA (promma.info). “Cute and girlie is in, as opposed to the impression I get in the States, where MMA is sporty and cool.”
Cultural differences aside, the fact that Modafferi resides full time in Japan presents geographical challenges to her being signed to a major organization such as Strikeforce, or just fighting in the U.S. at all.
The situation is worsened by the fact that it is very common for male fighters from Japan to get fights in the U.S. with little or no issue at all, which frustrates Modafferi in her quest to show the world what she is capable of.
“I feel so isolated here in Japan and want to tear my hair out when promotions fly in other fighters but not me.”
Although there have been talks of Modafferi possibly landing at Strikeforce, nothing is definitive at this time, as to where and when she will be fighting next.
Despite the challenges of finding fights, the alternative of moving back to the states, really isn’t an option for Modafferi with her career as an English teacher in Japan.
With the exploding growth and popularity of social sites, Modafferi is a consistent participant on many sites and regularly interacts on forums and sites such as mma.tv, and fightergirls.com, in addition to her myspace account (username roxyfighter), and facebook page.
Being an American in Japan brings it’s own social issues, and although her linguistic studies at UMASS prepared her somewhat for living in Japan, there is nothing like being an American living abroad… especially when you are a female professional mixed martial artist.
“Often the Japanese can't understand why I behave in certain ways, and I'm looked at critically for it.” Modafferi said.
“But nobody tells me directly, so I never know. It's like ‘When in Rome, do as the Roman's do, but we're not going to tell you how to behave like a Roman.’” Modafferi said. “I have to guess.”
Being in Japan for several years to pursue her career both in and out of the cage has required sacrifices for the young fighter, including missing her parents, holidays, honey mustard and the occasional turkey.
Despite the challenges that lay in front of her, as a fighter living in Japan, Modafferi is staying where she is, and is determined to show the world what she is made up at the highest levels of MMA.
Roxanne would like to send the following thanks to the fans:
"Thanks to my manager Shu Hirata for his hard work, to the fightlinker.com guys for all the support and publicity, and all my friends on myspace to post nice comments on my blog. and to you fans who are reading this! [Blog] Anderson Silva not relinquishing title - Soares says Henderson does not deserve next title s...: It is likely many fighters in the UFC middleweight division wish it were true, but regardless of a report on Yahoo! Sports, Anderson Silva is not relinquishing his 185 lbs. title to move to light heavyweight, and no such talks ever took place between Silva's manager Ed Soares and Dana White.
Soares is upset about the report and is getting his attorney involved according to ESPN's Franklin McNeil. A UFC spokesperson confirmed that Soares and White did not have a conversation in which they agreed Silva would move to light heavyweight permanently.
So what is next for what many consider to be the world's number one pound-for-pound fighter?
At the UFC 101 post-fight press conference White stated that a 185 lbs. rematch with Dan Henderson would probably be Silva's next bout. However, Soares would prefer Silva fight again at 205 lbs. until there is a legitimate contender at middleweight.
"I don't think there is a valid [middleweight] contender yet," Soares said. "To create a valid 185-pound contender, I think, Dan Henderson should fight the winner of Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt. I don't believe Dan Henderson deserves the title shot right now. The reason I don't is because a year and a half ago Anderson submitted him in the second round," explained Soares.
Soares has a different idea. "If anything, Nate Marquardt deserves a title shot before [Henderson]. I also think Demian Maia is in the running for [a title shot], too. … We'd like to do another fight at 205 … or a catchweight of some sort."
Anderson Silva's utter dismantling of Forrest Griffin on Aug. 8 proved he is real threat at light heavyweight. Although he will never fight for the title as long as his good friend Lyoto Machida sits on the throne, he can still stay active fighting top competition at 205 lbs. while earnest middleweights vie for the number one contender s... -*http://promma.info/index.php/2009/08/12/anderson-silva-not-relinquishing-title-soares-says-henderson-does-not-deserve-next-title-shot/
