[Blog] Georges St. Pierre wins "Fighter of the Year" at Fighters Only World MMA Awards 2009 - winners l...: Fighters Only Magazine held their World Mixed Martial Arts Awards 2009 Wednesday night at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. Many of the stars of the MMA world were there, including Dana White, Tito Ortiz, Georges St. Pierre, and Diego Sanchez, among others.

Iraq War veteran and welterweight standout Steve Carl signs with Bellator Fighting Championships #mma #ufc #sports http://ping.fm/svM6W
[Blog] Iraq War veteran and welterweight standout Steve Carl signs with Bellator Fighting Championsh...: [caption id="attachment_32996" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Steve Carl is Bellator's newest addition."][/caption]
CHICAGO, Ill. (Dec. 28, 2009) - In the latest addition to its much-heralded Season 2 roster, Bellator Fighting Championships announced Monday the acquisition of emerging MMA star Steve Carl, who will compete in the promotion's upcoming eight-man welterweight tournament beginning in April.
Carl, 25, a U.S. Army sergeant who served in the Iraq War, took up MMA about five years ago while stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and has since compiled a professional record of 10-1. His rear naked choke submission of the previously undefeated Ivan Ivanoff at the M-1 Challenge in Bulgaria earlier this year won him international acclaim and drew the attention of matchmakers from all of the top MMA promotions.
"I was getting offers from the UFC and others, but Bellator was just a better opportunity for me," Carl said. "I'm really excited about the exposure that Bellator's TV deal will bring me and the chance to fight against some awesome competition."
Carl, an Iowa native and recent college graduate, joins fellow top MMA talents Dan Hornbuckle, Jacob McClintock, "Judo" Jim Wallhead and former NCAA wrestling champion and U.S. Olympian Ben Askren in what was recently described by Yahoo! Sports as "a kick-butt welterweight tournament" that offers "good balance of experienced fighters ... and up-and-comers with unlimited potential."
"Steve Carl is yet another tremendous addition to our welterweight tournament," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "In addition to being a talented fighter, he also has an inspirational life story that will make it tough not to root for him once our second season begins April 8th. I'm proud to welcome him to our organization."
Carl's signing with Bellator marks the culmination of a harrowing three-year journey that, at one time, put his promising MMA career in jeopardy. In December 2006, he was involved in a horrific car crash on an icy eastern Iowa road that shattered his right leg and left doctors questioning whether he would ever walk again without the use of a cane. His career in fighting, they said, was almost certainly over.
Carl, though, was undeterred, and began a rigorous conditioning and physical therapy regimen that put him back in the cage in roughly 18 months. During his first few bouts after his return, he fought with a titanium rod implanted in his leg.
"After the accident, everyone wanted me to move on from MMA," Carl said. "But I knew it in my heart beforehand that I had a chance to make it to the top and I didn't want to give that up. Now I've got the chance to show what I can do in front of the whole country on national TV."
Each of Bellator's 24 fights during Seasons 2 and 3 will be distributed live in primetime on Thursday nights on FOX Sports Net and its regional sports network affiliates. The top moments from each week's live events will then be condensed into an action-packed 30-minute highlight show, broadcast every Saturday night, late night, on NBC. A one-hour highlight show will air in Spanish on Telemundo every Saturday night from midnight to 1 a.m.

Possible return to action for rising heavyweight Dave "Pee Wee" Herman on February 20 in Nashville, Tenn. (updated) #mma #ufc #sports http://ping.fm/VEsUQ

ProMMA.info has learned that rising MMA heavyweight star Dave "Pee Wee" Herman (16-1) may headline a Feb. 20 fight card in Nashville, Tenn. Nashville-based promotion Gameness Fighting Championship (GFC) will be returning to the Sports Arena at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds the third Saturday in February, and if goes as rumored, it could be their most heavily stacked card to date.
Herman is coming off a first round knockout of Jim York at Sengoku 11 back in November. His "heel smash" knockout of York was a "knockout of the year" nominee on Inside MMA's 2009 "Bazzie Awards."
Originally from Indiana, and armed with little more than a wrestling background and some heavy hands, Herman, who made his pro debut in Dec. 2006, finished his first 13 fights in the first round, stopping every single opponent.
After losing his first and only bout at Sengoku No Ran 2009, Herman relocated to Nashville under the recommendation of his manager to amp up his training under the tutelage of Ed Clay at Nashville MMA.
Evidently the move paid off because Herman was back on track, winning his next three fights with first round knockouts.
No potential opponent has yet been named for Herman's possible GFC bout.
Also expected to fight on the Gameness card is local favorite and UFC veteran Josh "The Warhammer" Schockman. [Blog] Life at the Tapout House with female MMA fighter Tami Carswell - Are we having fun y...: [caption id="attachment_32962" align="alignleft" width="299" caption="Photo by Tracy Lee - Tami and the Tapout House crew out celebrating the night before WEC 45 weigh-ins."][/caption]
I am back to training harder; working on all the parts of Tami that can be worked on. Greg gave me a training protocol to work my hips on the ground which I am very happy about since I can't roll around on my shoulder right now.
There was a pumped up feeling around the house this week in which our boy Cowboy has been getting ready for WEC 45 in Vegas this weekend. Cowboy would just break out into random bouncing around saying he couldn't wait for this fight. It's been fun to witness his playfulness around fighting. You can see how much fun this is for him.
Unfortunately, for his opponents Cowboy has "Play Time" tattooed on his shins. True Dat!!! At the weigh-ins Cowboy bounced out with all that energy to face Ed Ratcliff who immediately put a smile on Cowboy's face by saying that he was going to knock him out.
Watching Cowboy up there bouncing and smiling filled me with much anticipation of yet another entertaining fight! When this is your lifestyle it is fun to fight and watch fights, and fights, and fights!
After the weigh ins all of us who live in the Tapout house joined Cowboy as he re-hydrated. Talk about an entourage. A communal life isn't for everyone but the more the merrier for Cowboy.
I met Cowboy's grandmother Jerry and grandfather Donald who turn out to be Cowboy's biggest fans and both fans of my blogs.
Jerry knows more than any of us about MMA. She demonstrated that to us by informing us about many 2009 MMA facts including the fact that Cowboy's fight with Ben Henderson was voted "Fight of the Year" in the WEC.
Jerry told us that she always cuts weight with Cowboy before the fight by not eating the day before the weigh-ins. "If he complains or is moody about not eating I tell him to cowboy up," said Jerry.
After he was all hydrated Jerry and Donald took us all to dinner in the hotel. I could see where Cowboy gets his generosity. On the way down, Cowboy said what's up to Ben Henderson who was shopping. I would love to see another rematch between those two and so would Cowboy. Talk about entertaining fights! Me and my boys at the gym back home rate that fight the best loss of all time.
[caption id="attachment_32964" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Photo by Jeff Sherwood / Sherdog - After being penalized two points, Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone did what he had to do to finish off Ed Ratcliff at WEC 45."][/caption]
After dinner we all went to check out this stereotypical rock cover band named "Steel Panther". They not only played well, they were hilarious with their comical and typical rock star portrayals. We all had a blast including Cowboy who got on stage, sang with them, and peeled off his shirt. We all hung out with the band for a bit afterward and Cowboy took photos with fans. That was only the pre-fight celebration.
The next day we all headed out to the fight and like I told Cowboy in a text, he fucking rocked our worlds. Cowboy looked back to his corner in the middle of it and asked "Are we having fun yet?" Hell yeah we were!
Yes, we were having fun with two points took away for unintentional low knees (for which Cowboy apologized to Ed's mom during the fight), crazy leg attacks and a triangle attempt at the same time madness, constant stalking of his opponent, thunderous kicks, high knees, and eventually a rear naked choke to end it all.
All of us there and any other Cowboy fan out there were hypnotized by the ups and downs/twists and turns of the ride we were on. Grandma told Herb Dean that he was a fair ref and that he was also the reason that Cowboy had won.
With two points down he was either going to knock him out or choke him out, no doubt.
His opponent was limping to the press conference after the fight from all the kicks he ate for dinner. Cowboy, on the other hand, was energized and ready to go celebrate.
What an excellent host indeed was Cowboy meeting and greeting fans, taking his whole crew to his V.I.P. after party, and making sure everyone was having a great time at his celebration. "It's your time now guys," Cowboy said at dinner referring to the fact that nearly all of us in the house have scheduled fights coming up.
Everyone's hitting hard in January and feeding off each other's energy. I am so thankful to Cowboy and Boom Superfoods to be here right now. The Tapout house will be tapping you out in 2010!
When we got back from Vegas I started getting my plan ready for my holiday workouts. Because the altitude here in New Mexico is so high this is a perfect time to push my cardio!! So that is my plan.
Julie told me there was a new girl, Emily Kagan, who just moved out to New Mexico to join Jackson's female fight team and I should meet her because she is up to the same thing I am in regards to starting a fight career.
She happens to have similar cardio goals for the holidays so we are hitting the hills. Yesterday we went out for a hike in the hills and got back to find our cars jacked. More obstacles! I am hoping that whoever took my stuff is going to give some of it to a sweet young girl for Christmas and she wants to grow up to be a fighter!!
[caption id="attachment_32963" align="alignleft" width="186" caption="Photo by Tracy Lee - Tami and the Tapout House crew ready for "Cowboy's" big fight."][/caption]
The good news is my sponsor Boom Superfoods is going to help me replace my stuff!! Thank you Jeff! I really appreciate your support and belief in my dream.
Emily and I are not thwarted from our plan of holiday cardio. We will however be leaving our gear at home. Emily is a vegan and conscious organic eater so I will be happy to share some FOODFIGHT with her this Christmas day! Happy holidays all!

Gary "Big Daddy" Goodridge takes on Ron Sparks in MMA Big Show main event on Jan. 9 #mma #ufc #sports http://ping.fm/hKH8C
[Blog] Gary "Big Daddy" Goodridge takes on "The Monster" Ron Sparks in MMA Big Show main event on Januar...: Indiana (USA): 2009 was a big year for Midwest-based fight promotion MMA Big Show, which was recently chosen by ULTMMA.com alongside Art of Fighting, Shark Fights, and Rage in the Cage as this year's top local promotions in the United States. Now, the promotion Big Show is looking to enter the next phase of its evolution, as "NEW DAWN" will start the New Year off right for fight fans.
The event will emanate live from the Belterra Casino in Belterra, Indiana on Saturday, January 9th, and will feature the Big Show debut of UFC/PRIDE pioneer heavyweight slugger Gary "Big Daddy" Goodridge (23-19-1). The MMA legend will be taking on "The Monster" Ron Sparks (5-0) in a true clash of the titans.
In the co-main event, former TUF competitor Luke Zachrich (10-1) will battle undefeated up-and-comer Byron Sutton (5-0) with the MMA Big Show Light Heavyweight belt on the line.
Tickets for "NEW DAWN" are priced at $25, $40, $45, and $75, and are available through Ticketmaster, as well as http://ping.fm/473Zd 21 and over only, please.
Gary "Big Daddy" Goodridge burst onto the MMA scene in his debut in 1996, making it all the way to the finals of the UFC 8 tourney. In one of the most memorable finishes in UFC history, Goodridge trapped both the arms of his opponent in a crucifix hold and proceeded to deliver multiple elbow blows to his head, ending the bout in 13 seconds.
He also competed at the very first PRIDE event, knocking out MMA great Oleg Taktarov with three seconds left in the first round. "Big Daddy" became a mainstay in PRIDE, fighting there 19 times. In 1999, Goodridge began his kickboxing career, which culminated with him becoming the 2005 K-1 World Grand Prix in Hawaii champion.
He has faced some of the top competition in both MMA and kickboxing. Fighters like Mark Coleman, Marco Ruas, Igor Vovchanchyn, Tom Erikson, Ricco Rodriguez, Heath Herring, Paul Buentello, Alistair Overeem, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Fedor Emelianenko have faced the wrath of "Big Daddy," with talent such as Taktarov, Don Frye, Andre Roberts, and Dan Bobish going down in defeat.
And Goodridge is ready to add another victim to his list when he faces Ron Sparks on January 9th. "I'm doing my research on Ron. He's a big muscle-bound guy, he's very entertaining to look at, and it's going to be like a young buck taking on the old lion. I know Ron has a really good right hand, so I've been training with boxers quite a bit, including a Canadian boxing champ. I have my game plan, and I'm going to try to stick to it, but everything changes once you get hit," said the UFC/PRIDE veteran. In a bit of gamesmanship, he added: "The show should be called anger management."
"NEW DAWN" is all about the arrival of the fresh and exciting, and "The Monster" Ron Sparks certainly fits into that category. The undefeated super-heavyweight is very aptly named, as the 6'5" 285-pounder packs quite a wallop.
Sparks, with his freakish girth and power, has finished four of his five opponents by KO/TKO. His calls for bouts with Kimbo Slice and Hong-Man Choi have gone unrequited, and so the massive "Monster" has set his sights on the extremely experienced and dangerous Gary Goodridge.
"Trust me, we're going to go down swinging. There will be no tap-outs, and it will be a quick one. We've both been training hard, so stay tuned, and don't blink," he said about his bout with "Big Daddy." Sparks obviously has a lot of respect for his opponent, and isn't shy about showing it.
"It's an honor to get it on with him. He's a UFC vet, a legend, and I've been a big fan of his. I've watched him for a long time, and I'm going to do my best to win. I don't talk a lot of trash, and I believe in being respectful of the guy getting in there. It's definitely an honor to be in the cage with Gary Goodridge."
And "The Monster" is looking forward to more with MMA Big Show: "I'm really excited about being featured on MMA Big Show, and hopefully there will be more to come."
Luke Zachrich is one of the most underrated fighters in MMA today. Sporting an outstanding 10-1 record, the light heavyweight has developed a reputation as a great all-around fighter with a crowd-pleasing penchant for ending his fights decisively.
He'll be fighting for the MMA Big Show Light Heavyweight title, and with the belt, his record, and his reputation on the line, Zachrich is taking his fight with Byron Sutton very seriously. "
I've seen some of his fights. He hasn't been fighting for a long time, but he's fought a lot in that time. From what I've seen, he's even fought on a bi-weekly basis at times. And I heard that he's recently been training with Chris Lytle."
But though Zachrich is taking the fight seriously, the veteran is confident. "From what I'm seen, I'm not too impressed with the kid. He's got some skills, but with my experience, I don't think there's anything he can do that I haven't seen. But he's tough, explosive, and fast, and anything can happen. It's a tough fight for me, no matter what."
This fight will be Zachrich's debut with MMA Big Show, and he's elated with the opportunity to entertain the fans.
"I lived in Cincy for three years, but I was never able to make it down for a show before. But I've trained with [current MMA Big Show Welterweight Champion "Relentless" Roger] Bowling and [former MMA Big Show Middleweight Champion] Mojo [Horne], and those guys talk very highly of the promotion and [owner] Jason Appleton. I was at the Browning-Cornwell fight, and I was very impressed. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but it was such a quality show. I was very, very impressed, and I'm very excited to fight for Big Show. I've fought on huge shows and small shows, and I can't wait to get out there and put it all on the line for the Big Show fans."
MMA Big Show's most recent offering, "ONSLAUGHT," took place on Saturday, November 28th at the Belterra Casino in Belterra, Indiana. In the main event, former UFC fighter and TUF competitor Junie Browning finished off a tough young local favorite Scott Cornwell in the first round after a valiant effort from the Cincinnati native.
The co-main event saw former MMA Big Show Middleweight Champion Mojo Horne get back in the win column, as he conquered Kevin Barkdull in a first round submission victory.
In addition, MMA Big Show Amateur Lightweight Champion "The Samurai" Chris Bennett dominated Brian Karmolinski in their bout, prompting the post-fight interviewer to question when the 17-fight amateur veteran will go pro. In all, 14 entertaining bouts were put on, and a great show was enjoyed by the fans in attendance.

[Blog] British welterweight star Jim Wallhead inks multi-fight deal with Bellator Fighting Championsh...: [caption id="attachment_32881" align="alignleft" width="240" caption=""Judo Jim" is on a six-fight win streak."][/caption]
CHICAGO, Ill. (December 21, 2009) - In yet another off-season coup, Bellator Fighting Championships announced Monday the acquisition of one of the top free-agent mixed martial artists in all of Europe, 18-5 British welterweight Jim Wallhead.
Wallhead-also known as "Judo Jim"-has won each of his last six fights and nine out of his last 11. He was recently lauded by Sherdog.com as "the top 170-pound fighter in Europe yet to be signed by a major promotion."
With his signing, Wallhead has been invited to compete in Bellator's upcoming eight-man welterweight tournament, which commences during Bellator's Season 2 kickoff on April 8, 2010. Bellator will also conduct tournaments at 145, 155, and 185 lbs. with the winners of this year's tournaments being declared No. 1 contenders to Bellator's current roster of champions.
"Adding Jim to our welterweight division is magic for Bellator," said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney. "As one of Europe's top welterweights, Jim will no doubt use our April tournament on Fox Sports Net to introduce U.S. MMA fans to what European fans already know. Jim is the real deal. As a fan, I can't wait to see Wallhead, Askren, McClintok and Hornbuckle face off."
A native of Leicester, England, Wallhead, 25, earned his black belt in Judo at age 16 and won Britain's under-21 Judo championship at the age of 19. He made his professional MMA debut in 2005 at the age of 21 and has since compiled wins over top MMA talents like UFC veterans Jason Tan and Steven Lynch. In his most recent fight, Wallhead won a unanimous decision against former TUF participant Che Mills in Wales.
Wallhead said that he was drawn to Bellator because of the opportunity to match up against other top welterweights and the chance to spread his notoriety to MMA fans in the U.S. via Bellator's historic multi-tiered TV distribution alliance.
"I've been looking for a home in a big promotion for quite a while, so I'm just over the moon about signing with Bellator," said Wallhead. "I watched the Bellator shows last year, and it's really just a great, high-standards promotion. I'm relishing the challenge to let it all hang out, to take some risks and, hopefully, to have some success against the top competition in the world."
Wallhead currently resides in Loughborough, England, with his wife and three-year-old daughter.

After Melendez (17-2) of San Francisco earned a unanimous, five-round decision and avenged a loss to Josh Thomson (16-3), of San Jose, and Brazil's Jacare (11-2) and King Mo (6-0), of Carlsbad, Calif., had earlier scored first-round victories over Matt Lindland (21-7) of Oregon City, Ore., and Mike Whitehead, (24-7) of Las Vegas, respectively, Smith stormed back from the brink of defeat - again - to knock out the previously undefeated Le at 3:25 of the third round.
The event, presented by SHOWTIME and STRIKEFORCE, aired live simultaneously on SHOWTIME® and on the Web (Strikeforce: All Access) at http://ping.fm/aHXFI The SHOWTIME telecast began at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast); the Strikeforce: All Access webcast went at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT and is available through Dec. 24 at the site.
Smith (18-6), of Elk Grove, Calif., is known for dramatic victories (see: Benji Radach on April 1, 2009, at HP Pavilion and a highlight-reel win over Pete Sell on Nov. 11, 2006, to name two). But the victory over Le (6-1), of San Jose, may be impossible to top.
Southpaw Le, making his first start in 21 months, had totally dominated for two-and-one-half rounds. The fight seemed over at least a couple of times as everything was going Le's way. His trademark spinning back kicks were connecting almost every time and they were knocking Smith around the cage. At one point, with Smith on the ground after getting dropped, Le seemed to throw more than 50 consecutive punches. He slammed Smith once.
But there is no quit in the courageous Smith, a proven finisher who somehow summoned the energy and heart - again - to twice drop Le. After he connected with two rights hands after Le was down, the referee stepped in and stopped it.
"This was one helluva fight,'' Smith said afterward. "He had me the first two-and-a-half rounds, but I've got a hard head. On the knockdowns, I faked the right and threw the left. Everyone always looks for my right, but the left hook is my best punch.
"Right now, I just want to go home and enjoy Christmas with my kids and family and friends. It never matters who I fight. I just want these types of tough fights.''
Le, a former STRIKEFORCE middleweight titleholder who relinquished the belt to concentrate on an acting career, offered no excuses.
"He got me with a punch,'' Le said. "I did my best, he did his best tonight and we both fought our hearts out. This was a great fight. It was not about focus, or a lack thereof. I just got caught. It is what it is.''
In a wildly exciting 25-minute, crowd-pleasing give-and-take slugfest that featured a bit of everything, Melendez outpointed Thomson by the scores of 49-46 twice and 49-47. Most everybody had rubber match on their minds when it was over.
"I feel great,'' Melendez said. "I sparred better for this fight than I did for our first, but Josh is the toughest guy I've fought and the toughest guy around.''
Said Thomson, who unanimously outpointed Melendez over five rounds on June 27, 2008, but has not fought since Sept. 20, 2008, due to injuries:
"There are no excuses. It had nothing to do with the layoff. Gilbert was the better fighter tonight. I'll do whatever STRIKEFORCE wants. I'm up for a third fight if that's what they want.''
Jacare, a talented, non-nonsense, aggressive-minded sort, who will be an immediate threat in STRIKEFORCE's deep, talent-laden 185-pound weight class, submitted the more experienced Lindland, a 2000 Olympic Games silver medalist, with an arm triangle choke at 4:18 of the first round.
A flamboyant showman, King Mo was escorted down the aisle and into the cage for the opening bout of the telecast by six young, dancing ladies and wearing a crown on his head.
The southpaw, who seemingly is willing to fight anybody in any weight class, dropped Whitehead with a huge overhand right hand, followed with six more punches before the ref stepped in.
"This was a good fight for me, but I am ready for anybody,'' King Mo said.

[Blog] "Strikeforce: Evolution" recap: Melendez reclaims Lightweight title, Smith stuns Le and "King Mo" KO's Whiteh...: [caption id="attachment_32807" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Photo: Sherdog - "Hands of Steel" is a perfect nickname, but "Cardiac Kid" would work too."][/caption]
SAN JOSE, Calif. - Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez are no strangers to each other or five round wars. Another five round battle was in the cards for tonight's "Strikeforce: Evolution" lightweight title bout, with both fighters throwing everything but the kitchen sink at each other as the bell sounded on the fifth and final round. This time around, it was Gilbert Melendez that dominated the fight scoring a unanimous decision victory to regain the title that he lost to Thomson back in 2008.
Melendez (17-2) used his jab, often doubling up with it, to control the pace of the fight and utilized a stifling attack on his feet, dropping Thomson in the second and fifth rounds of the fight. Thomson battled back each time he found himself on his back, scrambling to his feet to stand in the pocket and trade bombs with "El Nino." Melendez employed a very effective left hand, leg kick combo to set the pace in the later rounds, but both fighters were ineffective in their take down attempts.
It was apparent in the later rounds, that the long lay off was affecting Thomson as he was visibly fatigued and breathing out of his mouth and winging wild punches while Melendez continued to land crisp strikes mixing in knees from the clinch on his way to a dominating win.
"Josh, hands down, is the toughest guy I’ve ever fought," said Melendez. "the toughest matchup for me, maybe the toughest match I’ll ever have.”
Scott Smith stuns Cung Le
In the main event of the evening, it was starting to look like Scott Smith was as outclassed as Diego Sanchez when he fought B.J. Penn. Through the first two rounds, Smith (17-6) landed only a handful of punches and was completely dominated by Cung Le's speed and pinpoint kicking, getting dropped numerous times with kicks to the head and body.
Cung Le was looking to close out his highlight reel of a performance going into the third and final round.
The final frame was more of the same as Le punished Smith to the body, head and legs. It was more like target practice then an MMA match, but by now, all of us know to never count out Scott Smith.
"Hands of Steel" showed the world how he got his nickname by faking a right hand and coming across with a short left hook that rocked Cung Le. Le was down briefly, but stood back up trying to shake the cobwebs off before Smith stepped forward to land his patented, one-punch power in his right hand, crumpling Le to the canvas.
Smith followed up the assault on Le with big punches before being pulled off by Big John McCarthy. Talk about a Hollywood ending to a fight, Cung Le couldn't have acted in a movie with a better script then this fight turned out to be. The loss was the first ever for Cung Le (6-1) in his fighting career and adds to Smith's highlight reel of unbelievable come backs and finishes.
"Jacare" displays world class grappling (and some boxing!)
Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (11-2) came into his bout with Matt Lindland as a world class grappler and submission specialist. No surprise there. However, it was Souza's boxing that was impressive against Lindland that ended up giving Lindland fits.
Souza worked his jab effectively and looked very crisp on his feet while Lindland looked slow and lethargic. Once the fight hit the ground, it was "Jacare" that was on top and looking to pass the guard of Lindland. Earlier in the fight, Lindland escaped an armbar attempt from Souza, but he could not survive the fight ending arm triangle that he found himself in later in the round.
I say "King", you say "K.O."
Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal had irritated Mike Whitehead coming into this bout. Whitehead couldn't understand all the hype behind Lawal, but now understands first hand the threat that "King Mo" brings into the cage.
Lawal looked very confident in the fight from the beginning, changing stances often, and keeping his hands down by his waste as he looked to pick Whitehead apart.
That's exactly what he did as Whitehead looked to continue his strategy of leg kicks against "King Mo". Lawal in a traditional stance at the time, countered a leg kick with a huge right hand that dropped Whitehead to the canvas. "King Mo" delivered a couple more shots that K.O.'d the big heavyweight on his way to a perfect 6-0 record and showing that he is a threat at "money weig... http://promma.info/index.php/2009/12/19/strikeforce-evolution-recap-melendez-reclaims-lightweight-title-smith-stuns-le-and-king-mo-kos-whitehead/

Mike Whitehead could not understand why King Mo has been getting all the hype? Now, do you think Whitehead understands "why the hype?"
The ultra-experienced Whitehead preferred to fight King Mo at heavyweight, and Mo, who said tonight he fights at "money weight," gladly obliged the big man who out-weighed Mo by over 40 pounds.
Whitehead landed a few leg kicks in the fight but that was it. He threw some punches but all he hit was air. Mo landed some solid jabs and hooks before he landed a huge right hand that dropped Whitehead to the canvas, where he followed up with a few extra shots that knocked "Iron" Mike out cold at 3:08 of round one.
For a world-class wrestler, King Mo's hands are looking better and better with each fight. He has defeated every person they have thrown his way so far, at heavyweight or light heavyweight. Now at 6-0 with five finishes, King Mo silences more doubters with each knew opponent he stops.
Who will be next for the rising star?

Cantwell, along with training partner Anthony Njokuani (who is fighting Chris Horodecki at this weekend's WEC event), hung out with hosts Brian and Mike for about half the show and discussed a myriad of topics. One such topic was Brian Stann.
The first time Cantwell faced Stann was at WEC 26 back in 2007. Stann won a quick 0:41 TKO over Cantwell, giving "The Robot" his first professional loss... but their saga was far from over.
Cantwell got to return the favor when the two met again, a year later at WEC 35. This time it was Cantwell who scored a TKO (second round), and took Stann's light heavyweight title.
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you view it), Cantwell was never able to defend that belt as he and Stann, along with the WEC's light heavyweight division was folded into the UFC.
Stann was able to get his shot at redemption against Cantwell when the two were matched up at "UFC Fight Night 19" this past September. It turned out to be a frustrating fight for "The Robot", who was expecting to fight the same "Brian Stann the brawler" he had fought twice previously, but instead, got a more elusive version. Cantwell ended up losing a three round unanimous decision.
Currently, two of Cantwell's three losses come from the hands of Brian Stann. However, if you think Cantwell is interested in one more fight against the Marine, forget it. When asked if he was looking to maybe get a rematch with Stann one more time, he said,
"No, not at all. If you saw my last fight with Stann, that guy did not want to fight me. People called it 'elusive', I called it 'fighting afraid.' I want to fight someone who is gonna go out there and fight me. No disrespect to Stann, he is a great person. But, the guy, he don't wanna fight me. And I don't want to fight people that don't want to fight me. I'm not a bully, you know what I'm saying? I want to fight guys that are going to bring the fight every single time no matter what, and unfortunately our last fight, he failed to do that."
Those are Cantwell's thoughts at the moment. It will be interesting to see if he still feels the same way a year or two down the road. It is quite likely the Cantwell vs. Stann saga is not over.
At the moment though, Cantwell has bigger fish to fry, namely a 205-pound Russian fish by the name of Vladamir "The Janitor" Matyushenko (23-4). The two will meet at UFC 108 on Jan. 2 in Las Vegas.
"The Janitor" will be a big step up in name and competition for Cantwell. He holds wins over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Pedro Rizzo, and Jason Lambert, to name just a few. Chances are Cantwell will not have to worry about Matyushenko being "elusive."

Six questions with Matt Lindland who faces Strikeforce newcomer "Jacare" Souza on Dec. 19, 2009, Showtime card #mma #ufc #strikeforce #sports #news http://ping.fm/7NlbS
[Blog] Six questions with Matt Lindland who faces Strikeforce newcomer "Jacare" Souza on Dec. 19, 2009, Showtime c...: [caption id="attachment_32660" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Lindland faces "Jacare" on Showtime"][/caption]
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Dec. 17, 2009) - Former Olympic wrestling medalist Matt "The Law" Lindland, who recently took a stab at the world of politics, answered Six Questions recently posed to him regarding his highly-anticipated return to mixed martial arts (MMA) action this Saturday during the live SHOWTIME® telecast of STRIKEFORCE: Evolution.
Lindland (21-6) will take on submission expert "Jacare" Souza (10-2) at middleweight (185 pounds) on the star-studded fight card being headlined by Cung Le vs. Scott Smith at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.
Lindland, the 2000 Olympic Games silver medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling, holds wins against Pat Miletich, as well as former champion Carlos Newton and Jeremy Horn. Lindland is one of only two men to submit Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Travis Lutter.
QUESTION: How's your training been going for Dec. 19?
LINDLAND: "How's my training going? I answer those questions every day. Can't you be a little more creative than that? My training is going good and if it wasn't I'd lie to you anyway and tell you it was."
QUESTION: OK. Fair enough. We'll get right into the politics questions. In 2008 you won the primary for a seat on the Oregon House of Representatives but were defeated in the general election. What did you learn from that experience and how active are you currently in politics?
LINDLAND: "You know, I'm really not that active. I'm an activist. I'm a registered Republican and I just felt it was my civic duty to run. I felt like we did not have a qualified candidate to run. Would I run for politics again if I had to? Yeah, absolutely. I would first try and find someone more qualified than me to do it and get behind them and support them instead but if I felt there wasn't anyone qualified then I would.
QUESTION: You must have learned a lot during your run in politics?
LINDLAND: "I did learn a lot about the political process. I learned it's not about valuables and principles but how much money you can raise. Politics is dirtier then NHB (No Holds Barred) when fighting was first starting and there were no rules. Politics has fewer rules than that."
QUESTION: Who is the toughest fighter you've ever faced?
LINDLAND: "I think it just really depends on what point of my career I was in. I mean, early in my career I faced the legend Pat Miletich (in 2003). Then I had to face Fedor Emelianenko (in 2007) who is the best heavyweight in the world. It just depends on where you're at in your career and when you're fighting these guys. But I guess the obvious answer would have to be Fedor. Everyone knows I've fought him and he's a phenomenal fighter."
QUESTION: You fought him in Russia. Was that tougher to do on his home soil than over here in the States? And would you like to face him again?
LINDLAND: "I think so. They don't make calls in Russia when guys grab ropes and stuff. He's in a different weight class now. It's a fight I don't need to take but I'll fight whoever. It doesn't matter to me."
QUESTION: Do your two children James and Robin like and participate in mixed martial arts?
LINDLAND: "Robin is a sophomore and doing track and field. As far as martial arts goes she's the highest ranked kid we've ever had come out of our kid's program. Both kids are pretty active in studying the martial arts. It's not something they're pursuing long term but I think teaching martial arts to kids, any combative sport, is a must. It teaches them a lot of good principles.

VERSUS stays in the cage - network signs multi-year extension with WEC and adds two UFC events to 2010 lineup #mma #wec #ufc #sports #news http://ping.fm/vNXjj
[Blog] VERSUS stays in the cage - network signs multi-year extension with WEC and adds two UFC events to 2010 lin...: NEW YORK, N.Y. (December 16, 2009)-VERSUS, the cable television home of World Extreme Cagefighting® (WEC®), today announced a multi-year extension with Zuffa LLC., the owners of both the WEC and UFC®. As part of VERSUS' renewal deal, the network will air seven live WEC fights and two live UFC events in 2010, marking the first time that live UFC events will air on a national sports cable network.
"Since 2007 fight fans have come to VERSUS for some of the best mixed martial arts action available on television. WEC on VERSUS has been a tremendous catalyst for network growth and solidified our position as a top destination in the MMA category," said Marc Fein, Executive Vice President of Programming, Production and Business Operations for VERSUS. "Continuing our thriving partnership with Zuffa and the addition of two UFC fights to our lineup will, without a doubt, propel VERSUS to the next level in live MMA offerings."
Live WEC fights on VERSUS in 2009 have been watched by more than six million viewers so far, up 18 percent over 2008. In fact, three of the five most-watched fights in network history all took place this year. One of the network's most notable fights of 2009 was on June 7 and featured the most-anticipated featherweight re-match in MMA history between former featherweight title holder Urijah Faber and Mike Brown. The fight lived up to the hype and made VERSUS the top-rated cable network in the country among all the key male demos.
"We have had great success with VERSUS and are excited about extending our deal for WEC and airing UFC events in 2010," said Dana White, UFC President.
In addition to the live WEC and UFC fights, the renewal agreement also gives VERSUS.com the ability to stream exclusive content, including one non-televised fight and behind-the-scenes footage from each live WEC event. The site will continue to feature in-depth news and information about what is happening on the MMA scene through blog features and one-on-one video interviews with major WEC and UFC personalities.
VERSUS will also continue to produce and air new episodes of WEC WrekCAGE, a series featuring an explosive mix of VERSUS' best live events and the top matches from WEC events never before seen on television as well as additional WEC programming such as Best-of-Year and Greatest Knockouts specials.
VERSUS' final WEC fight of 2009 will take place on Saturday, December 19, when lightweight title contender Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone takes on Ed Ratcliff and Muay Thai sensation Anthony Njokuani battles former IFL star Chris Horodecki. The fight will air live on VERSUS at 10 p.m. ET and will originate from The Pearl at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
The network's first live WEC fight in 2010 is scheduled for Sunday, January 10, at 9 p.m. ET and will feature the long-awaited lightweight title unification bout between reigning champion Jamie Varner and interim champion Ben Henderson at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. In addition to the main event championship bout, former featherweight champion "The California Kid" Urijah Faber makes his hometown return to face Raphael Assuncao, a top-ranked contender in the weight-class.

The fight lived up to the hype and made VERSUS the top-rated cable network in the country among all the key male demos.

Life at the Tapout House with female MMA fighter Tami Carswell - Victory favors those that take pain #mma #ufc #sports @tapout http://ping.fm/nIrub

Tami Carswell's Tapout house blog - Victory favors those that take pain
We started out strong going into the gym. Everyone energized from a chill weekend. First we had some great stand up drills lead by Greg and then we switched to take downs.
When it was my turn I entered with the intention of defending anything that came my way. Staying low, I was ready when my opposition shot in on me, sprawling out I defended the shoot.
What happened next I did not anticipate. My sparring partner grabbed my torso on the ground, picked me up, and slammed me down right on my shoulder. When I got up I knew something was different.
There was a big bump on the top of my shoulder. I went to Greg and said I thought something was up with it. "Yeah you need to see a doctor," was Greg's response. Great! The other guys took the take downs to kickboxing with take downs urged onward by Cowboy.
Cowboy is training for his upcoming fight and everyone knew what that meant. It was going to be a rough day. I stood around after I got my stuff together watching the guys come out of the cage bruised and tired.
While I was waiting to go get checked out, Frosty came in who happens to be an orthopedic doctor.
Frosty told me I had my clavicle separated from my AC joint in my shoulder and I tore a band of ligaments that was holding it down originally.
I thought the logical next step would be to push it back in somehow. He explained that would not work and it would heal back on top of the shoulder bone.
I got the lowdown in regards to healing times and training with the injury.
He suggested that I reschedule my fight for March to give me a little longer with my training.
I was lucky to have a medical expert who works with fighters to help advise on this fight specific injury. On the way home I found out that about five of the other guys had gone through the same injury, including Cowboy.
Cowboy gave me some opinions on pain control and said "welcome to the life."
What to do now? The plan is to wear a sling for awhile, take ibuprofen for the pain, and to start light training until I am ready to go full force.
Leonard told me that he had that same injury happen to him right before a fight and he had to train right through it. He said that it would be best for me to spar with the sling on to remind myself I was not ready to throw any right punches. The good news was I have to start relying on my right kicks more!
He told me that when he started back to throwing rights again he would sometimes see white spots when they landed because the pain was so intense. So much to look forward to!
I remember not too long ago, using an injury to help me improve my game. I broke my toe and used it as an excuse to concentrate on my jiu-jitsu.
I rolled and drilled with the boot on and then graduated to just rolling with one boxing shoe on to remind myself to take care of that side. I decided that I would even enter NAGA to have a competition to look forward to.
Everything happens for a reason. I am choosing to work the hell out of my right kicks in lieu of this. I plan to use the inevitable pain of it all to make my mind even stronger. The more obstacles the greater the glory!
I decided to call Jeff, founder and formulator of FOODFIGHT. FOODFIGHT is made by Boom Superfoods, my sponsor, and since I have been taking it I have had excellent results, including warding off a cold that was going around the house just by increasing the amount I drink of it throughout the day.
Jeff explained to me that yes, taking FOODFIGHT would also help me heal my injury faster. Just what I wanted to hear.
I am continuing to drink FOODFIGHT four times a day. The increased amount will not only help me with healing my injury but also cutting weight for my fight. I have found that it gives me the stamina I need to keep me going and also has me feel satiated even after a heavy training day.
Why will FOODFIGHT help me with my shoulder? Because of the recovery ingredients in it:
Maca has been shown in studies to help wounds heal faster among numerous other benefits.
Wild stinging nettle is high in silica, magnesium and other minerals that are great for building and repairing joint tissue, skin, hair and nails. It has been used as a spring tonic for centuries.
Spirulina has been an underground secret of endurance athletes for over 30 years. It is Mother Nature's very own multi vitamin/multi mineral and amino acid complex in a single cell package. Incredibly potent and powerful for stamina, endurance, recovery and detox/healing.
Chlorella is very similar while delivering other unique benefits.
It was great to be able to do light training twice today. The shoulder is feeling better everyday. It was also cool to watch Cowboy spar with Leonard; two excellent fighters focused and always in motion.
When we got home we watched the WEC preview for Cowboy's upcoming fight with Ratcliff. Watching Ratcliff's fight highlights I knew Cowboy was definitely going to cause that boy some pain!
Tonight Leonard came home with a tattoo artist who is working on the tattoo he started last week. His tattoo is of a Mexican samurai. Leonard explained that he wanted the samurai and his Mexican heritage together because they are similar in spirit.
The samurai warrior is technical and effective in its attacking methods. The way the Mexican people fought was in the same way. They had to fight hard to keep their independence. They are very prideful and hard working. Leonard is proud of his heritage and is adding this tattoo to his canvas to display that.
Kyle, another fighter resident here at the house, recently got a tattoo that has made an impression on me. It says "Victory favors those who take pain" in Latin. All of us here can relate. Part of fighting includes being intimate with pain. Like Cowboy said "welcome to the life".

The other great news that is going on for me while I have been here is that BOOM Superfoods is now an official sponsor of the new reality TV series "Ultimate Women Challenge," to air on syndicated NBC networks in 2010.
There will be celebrity hosts, judges and guests. All 16 female MMA fighters on the show will be using FOODFIGHT every day to enhance training and recovery.
Jeff McIntosh, founder and formulator of FOODFIGHT, will be on the show as well, demonstrating its use, and talking about the benefits of superfoods.
We are even talking about shooting the commercial right here in New Mexico featured one Miss Tami Love Carswell. I love my life! More on the show next blog.
